Brief History

The Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the most iconic of all French monuments. It is at once instantly recognizable and deeply evocative of the military glories and follies of France. The world’s largest triumphal arch forms the backdrop for a remarkable urban collection in Paris and illustrious historical symbol of the city. The monument surmounts the hill of Chaillot at the center of a star-shaped configuration of 12 radiating avenues. The structure was designed by Jean François Thérèse Chalgrin (1739-1811) and was completed on 1833. The most famous of its sculptural relief is La Marseillaise (1833-36) of François Rude. Its specific historic has become a crest of French devotion. This monument was built to honor the soldiers who fought during Napoleonic war. The Arc de Triomphe structure is similar to that of the Arc of Titus, only this triomphe is much higher than titus. Underneath the Arc is a tomb owned by unknown soldier during World War 1. Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin inspired by its Roman architecture version. He was replaced by Joust when he died when the construction of the building was on-going.
