Like all other islands in Palawan, the Agutaya Island is one of the homes of beautiful beaches and serene ambiance that a lot of locals and tourists do not really know about. As you may be familiar, the Philippines are comprised of a lot of islands from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and from the tiniest one to the largest you might be surprised on what beautiful location is in store for you.
The Island
The Agutaya Island is located in the Sulu Sea with the land area of 4.5 square miles. The Agutaya Island is part of the country, Philippines, province of Palawan and in the municipality of Cuyo. As of the year 2000, it has been taken into survey that the island is inhabited with a population of 10, 422 people.
The weather in this country is comprised mostly of summer and monsoon season. And when monsoon season begin, it is difficult to get to and from the nearby island of Cuyo to Agutaya Island which is actually only 20 miles away. Regardless if its summer or winter months, there are possible monsoons that comes which proves to be difficult for the locals.
The History
Agutaya was formerly a part if Cuyo until it became a separate district in the end part of the Spanish rule. The name of the town comes from an abundant root growing in the area named aguanan, and a kind of fish yon.
The Locals
This island has their own specific language called the Agutaynen and is spoken by 10, 000 people in their total population. As of the present, half of the populations who speak the language have stayed on the island as for the rest has lived off in Palawan.
The Economy
The island thrives in local cottage industries. Weaving of mats from buri and pandamus leaves is something the island gets their income from.
The Administration
Several islands are covered by the Municipality of Agutaya and are subdivided into ten barangays, which is a native Filipino term for a village, district or ward. Barangays are the smallest administrative division in the Philippines.
Agutaya Island and the ten barangays consist of Algeciras, Concepcion, Dit, Maracanao, Matarawis, Abagat (Pob.), Bangcal (Pob.), Cambian (Pob.), Villafria and Villasol.

- Spanish stone fort ruins built by Fr. Juan de Severo in 1683
- Dit Island, a dive site only 30 minutes from Agutaya by boat,
you can visit the Baluarte Caves here - Oco Island, known for its dive sites and impressive cliffs
- Taytay Island, known for its white sand beach
- Halog Island, a bird sanctuary that is three hours away
from Agutaya by boat - Pamalikan Island, this five hectare island has 1,000 meters
of white sand beach with coral reefs. Owned by the prestige Soriano group of San Miguel Corporation, this is also the location for the popular Amanpulo Resort. - Tinituan Island, known as Concepcion Island impresses guests being as a first class snorkeling area
