Charleston, South Carolina

The second largest city in South Carolina, Charleston is located at the juncture of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet at the Atlantic Ocean. It was attacked twice during the American Revolution in 1861, Citadel cadets fired on Union ships entering Charleston Harbor after South Carolina seceded from the Union following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President.

Portland, Maine

Portland is the largest city in Maine. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean and was settled in the early 1600’s. Portland is the home of the Historic Old Port– full of cobblestone streets, fishing piers and 19th century buildings. It is located along Portland Harbor that is formed at the mouth of the Fore River and part of Casco Bay. The Portland Head Light- the first light house built by the US Government and is located on Cape Elizabeth and is part of Fort Williams Park. George Washington directed the light house to be built and construction was completed in 1791. It is on the National Historic Register and operated by the US Coast Guard.

Always buy tickets for trips or experiences from the actual attraction office or tourist shop, and if a tout offers you cut-price tickets, you can be certain it’s a fake and won’t grant you admission. Also beware of trips that are sold through unofficial channels, or you might end up waiting for a boat tour guide that never materialises.

#4 Sticky Fingers: Pickpockets are well practised at getting in and out of your bag, purse or pockets before you’ve even noticed anything has happened. Always split up your cash, never carry all of your important documents in one place and be sure to choose pockets and bags that are sealed and difficult for someone to open.

#5 High Tea: The Shanghai Tea Scam is an expensive scam to fall foul of. In Shanghai, westerners are approached by young Chinese students – typically with excellent English, who will joke and laugh then invite their new friend to a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. After tasting several teas, the group will then be presented with a bill to be split between them, with the westerner being expected to pay extortionate amounts. Even well travelled folks get sucked into tricks like this, as you’ll find out from backpacker Lauren, who at least managed to get her revenge with a swift right to the jaw of her scammer.

While Diwali is celebrated by Hindus all over the world, in the U.S., 2 million Americans celebrate Diwali.

The Hindu New Year

Much like Judaism’s Rosh Hashanah, Diwali is almost like a combination of Hanukkah’s festival of lights and America’s Fourth of July’s firework celebrations.

The Meaning of Diwali

On a deeper, more spiritual level, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. One of the legends Diwali commemorates is the return of Hinduism’s Lord Rama from a 14-year exile in the forest. According to the ancient Hindu epic “Ramayana,” Lord Rama destroys the 10-headed demon Narakasura, and, on his return home, villagers light lamps to show him the way home. The name Diwali literally means “row of lights.”

What Happens at Diwali?

Most of India takes off work to celebrate Diwali, and for good reason. The days’ festivities include praying at Hindu temples and delivering food to friends and families. Participants also purchase new clothes and clean their homes from top to bottom. Traditional Diwali parties consist of dancing, variety acts and skits, and, of course, fireworks. Firecrackers symbolize keeping the evil spirits at bay, and small, clay lanterns (called diyas) stay lit all night.

The Six Days of Diwali

Diwali falls on the new moon night between mid-October and mid-November. It is celebrated for six days, which include:

1. Vasu Baras: Vasu means cow, which is a sacred animal to Hindus. On this day, the cow and calf are worshiped.
2. Dhanatrayodashi: This day is considered a fortunate day for shopping for silverware and other gold and silver items.
3. Naraka Chaturdashi: This marks the day on which the 10-headed demon was killed and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. In South India, this is the day of the largest festivities. Hindus wake up well before dawn, take a fragrant oil bath, and purchase new clothes for the day. They light lamps all around the house and shoot off firecrackers at night.
4. Lakshmi Puja: On this day, Hindus worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of fortunate beginnings, by lighting lamps all across the city to welcome good fortune.
5. Govardhan Puja: Also called Annakut, which translates to “heap of grain,” this day is celebrated as the day Krishna, who is the “supreme being” in Hinduism, defeated Indra when he was overtaken with pride and was destroying the pastureland. Men present gifts to their wives on this day.
6. Bhaiduj: Bhaiduj is a significant day for brothers and sisters to show each other their love. Sisters will perform the Teeka ceremony, praying for their brothers to have long and happy lives, while brothers will give gifts to their sisters.

Discover a large family

Become familiar with the spider, is also to discover the infinite variety of species: 1600 in France, between 35 000 and 40 000 in the world, not to mention all those we know, especially in equatorial and tropical , which concentrate the highest number of species. The spiders were indeed colonized all walks of life, even if they are less common in extreme environments and probably absent from the polar caps. Visitors can see the spiders of all sizes, colorful and multifaceted, many of which are not as ugly one wants to admit. Some of them, the most striking, are reproduced in large models.

Starting with your arrangements for travel you want to make sure you have all your documents in at very least one place. Preferably everyone you are travelling with should have a copy of everyone’s travel documents so that should any get lost you will all be able to travel still. Make sure you have printed out all your travel documents and have your passports to hand. Many airlines now let you pre-print your boarding cards and this is highly recommended as it lets you skip at least one stage of the check in process. Indeed, motorbikes are a common sight on the roads of Vietnam, with many of the Vietnamese seeing the motorbike as a bionic limb as much as a mode of transportation. Many Vietnamese park their bikes in their living rooms and see legs and feet merely as backup forms of transport, to be used only as a last resort. Motorbikes are often seen swarming through the streets and onto the sidewalks, honking as they weave their way past obstacles. They are often weighed down with the likes of plate glass, doors, household appliances and even amusement park props.

There has been a continuous increase in the number of motorbikes in Vietnam, and it is now estimated that there are almost 20 million of them, according to the World Bank. There are an estimated 3 million purely in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), equating to about one motorbike for every two people in the city. “Motos” make up the largest portion of vehicles to be found on Vietnamese roads, and are defined as small engine, 50cc to 400cc motorbikes[3].

The country’s rampant love affair with motorbikes has been associated with a substantial number of collisions, particularly on the country’s highways, with 80% of the world’s traffic accidents, according to the World Health Organization, said to take place in South East Asia[4].  Hence, the Government of Vietnam has become stricter in dealing with the country’s abundance of motorcycles by introducing, as of the beginning of March 2009, hefty fines for those motorcyclists caught with out-of-date motorbike insurance.

Despite this, there remains a great interest in motorbikes in Vietnam, along with a kamikaze attitude to road rules and safety. Although a law mandating the use of helmets has recently come into effect, their use was previously very rare, with their mocking nickname of “rice cookers” being a fair representation of the citizens’ attitude to wearing them.

The San, more commonly known as the Bushmen, have been around for millennia. Multiple records show that they predate the Egyptians, Mayans, Greeks, Romans and almost any other civilisation in modern recorded history. The early Egyptians and the Chinese have only been around for seven to eight thousand years, whereas there is evidence of San civilisation 120,000 years ago – and boy did they love camping.

The San were known for their stamina and were able to pursue their prey for days, tiring it out until it collapsed whereupon they were able to kill and eat it either with hunting buddies or with family once they returned home. In order to find prey they would ‘camp’ out for days, taking only what they could carry and run with. This was because they often tracked herds of animals for days before selecting one or a group to hunt. Initially they used caves to live in when they tracked animals, setting up a fire at the entrance to warm them up and ward off the more dangerous predators and competition such as Lions, Hyenas, Leopard and Cheetah. To do this they left the kitchen sink, microwave and washing machine at home, taking only a bow with arrows or spears, a stone or bone knife, ostrich eggs which they carried water in and a set of light sticks wrapped in animal skin or mats woven from reeds. These sticks formed the first tents as we know them today. These tents were approximately 150 cm tall, had sticks arranged in a circle and then had the animal skins or mats thrown over the top. They were able to set them up rapidly and take them down even faster.

It wasn’t just the hunters who moved around though. Often entire San villages would move from place to place following the migrating herds as they moved with the seasons. They would pack up their homes, take what they could carry and follow the hunters, moving along well known trails and camping at well established spots until they reached their destination. This nomadic life places the San as the leaders and pioneers in what we know today as camping.

People claim it is an acquired taste, but if you have never eaten it before, it is actually normal for you to involuntarily gag when putting a tiny cube of it into your mouth. If that is the natural reaction of your body – you should listen to it.

It is dangerous to eat if the larvae have died in the cheese, so it has to be eaten while they are alive. When disturbed, they can launch 15 centimetres into the air and if they survive the digestive process when consumed, they can cause havoc in the intestines which causes one to vomit and/or have a bloody running stomach.

1. Balut:

Believe it or not, this is a popular delicacy in Asia, with many people believing it is an effective aphrodisiac. Using duck or chicken eggs, one would let the embryo grow until the miniature bird inside becomes visible and then it would be deemed ready for your plate. Considered to be high in protein, Balut is usually sold by street vendors and the correct way to eat it is to sip the broth that surrounds the embryo before peeling the egg and eating the rest. • Make sure the hotel room is comfortable, and the bed is large enough to accommodate three people – your partner and you, and the baby in your belly!
• Take your medical papers with you. Some airlines actually require knowing your due date. And if you need medical assistance while on holiday for whatever reason, they will come in handy too.
• Check out the local medical facilities. If you were to face a sudden emergency, where are the local doctors or hospitals you could turn to?

Don’t

• Lie on a beach in the hot sun for hours on end. There are indications that a prolonged rise of temperature is not good for your baby.
• Planning a long hike is probably not the best idea while you have a huge bump. Making sure you have plenty of stops, and opportunities to rest, is a good idea.
• Don’t run out of water! Dehydration is always serious, but pregnant women need to take special care to stay hydrated. Especially if you are traveling to a warm destination, you need to make sure you keep on sipping water.

If you are planning a scuba diving holiday – as it becoming increasingly popular these days – it’s worth taking a look at some of the world’s top scuba diving locations. Different sources will list different locations, as the criteria for deciding just what exactly is an amazing scuba diving location differs from person to person, but ultimately visibility, things to see (e.g. marine life, ship wrecks, coral), warmth and accessibility are all major factors. However the main factor that will separate two scuba diver’s lists is popularity – for some the ultimate scuba diving location is the one that very few people know about.

Topping the list of hotspots worldwide is The Blue Hole in Egypt. Whatever level of scuba diver you are, ‘the hole’ is a place to check out. It was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, a French naval officer with a particular passion for scuba diving. He declared it to be one of the top scuba locations in the world and the crowds quickly followed. He wasn’t wrong of course, plenty of people since him have described it as a top diving location and a quick look at any one of the many lists citing top diving locations around the world will usually place The Blue Hole in the top three.
It’s proximity to Europe has made it particularly popular with divers from the United Kingdom and the European continent in recent years, all travelling to enjoy holidays in Sharm El Sheikh and diving trips around Ras Mohammed, taking the opportunity to enjoy all of what The Blue Hole has to offer.

Thailand has some of the best dive sites in the world. The diving near Phuket, Ko Tao, Similian Islands, and Surin Islands is famous for brightly colored fish and coral. It’s also one of the cheapest places in the world to learn if you have been thinking about.
