The festival takes place in February and this year runs from February 16th to 26th. However, it is preceded by other associated festivals, meaning that the month of February is full of events. Finally, as in previous years, the festival will focus on one particular country. This year it is the turn of German filmmakers to be highlighted in the ‘Welcome to Germany’ feature. And to round everything off, there is the Glasgow Music and Film Festival, which includes documentaries and live performances.

2012 is the Year of Creative Scotland and the film festival is the first major event of this important year and will kick off this cultural year in style.

Alhambra-the roots

The slopes are a little more gentle than the European Alps and the long trails are the perfect place to practice turns. The resort is large but does not lack in atmosphere – it’s very friendly and picturesque with absolutely loads going on aside from the skiing. Sainte Foy Tarentaise, France

A small and charming resort with a deservedly good reputation for empty slopes, high-quality accommodation and a laid-back atmosphere. The ski area is tiny compared to most of the other Alpine resorts, which make it less daunting for beginners. The nursery slopes are very welcoming, and there’s a long and gentle beginner slope higher up for you to practise on. Night life here is non existent so perhaps this is a good resort for novice couples looking for a romantic skiing experience. You can reach Ste Foy Tarentaise by flying to Chambery (about one hour transfer), Lyon or Grenoble (around two hours transfer).

Soldeu, Andorra

Hailed as one of Europe’s best beginner resorts, Soldeu has two extensive nursery areas and plenty of terrain for beginners in the rolling slopes both above and below the tree line. There are a number of excellent British or English speaking instructors and once you progress there’s also a good range of slightly harder runs.  What the resort lacks in high mountain atmosphere it makes up for in good weather (lots of sun) and exuberant night life, which gets pretty lively.  Andorra is a duty-free zone so it’s also inexpensive. All in all an unpretentious and welcoming resort.

Alpe d’Huez, France

One of the Alps’ best known and biggest resorts, Alpe d’Huez is close to Grenoble airport so it’s easy to get to from the UK as well as being great for beginners. It’s not pretty (thanks to the 60s and 70s architecture) but is ringed by an impressive array of beginner slopes. There’s a British ski school here to nurse you through your first turns and plenty of accommodation, from low to high end. It is a snow sure resort and as most of it faces south you’ll get lovely long sunny days of skiing, especially in Spring. The resort centre has a plethora of excellent restaurants and many great après-ski venues.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

Seriously gorgeous – like something straight off a chocolate box – Saas Fee’s stunning scenery and secluded beginner’s area is ideal for novices. Set beneath mighty 4000m peaks and a big glacier it is a car-free town with a gorgeous village centre which has kept its old charm. There are spacious nursery slopes close to the village and plenty of wide open pistes to practice on as well as an excellent lift system. Look for accommodation near the slopes as it does spread over a large area. The atmosphere is chilled out, the people welcoming, and the night life is fun but not over the top.

Bankso, Bulgaria

Bansko is the newest and most modern of the Bulgarian ski resorts and is set in a World Heritage Site surrounded by spectacular mountains. Situated at the base of the Pirin Mountains it offers breath taking alpine scenery combined with the traditional spirit of a small town. The ski lift system is bang up to date and easy to use and there is a good range of nursery slopes. Skiing here is excellent value as it is cheaper than most of the other resorts featured here without losing any of the quality.

North Devon has some delightful gardens, including Rosemoor RHS Garden near Torrington with its abundance of rare and indigenous specimens and well planned seasonal gardens. Also nearby in Torrington is Dartington Crystal where you can decorate your own piece of Dartington Crystal, try glass blowing or hand cast a keepsake.

For a more active day the north Devon coast boasts some of the most dramatic stretches of the South West coast path. The highest point is at Great Hangman where the cliffs rise 320m (1043 ft) above the sea with breathtaking views of Exmoor, the Welsh coast and Lundy. Hire a bike and explore the Tarka Trail, which runs through some of Devon’s loveliest countryside, villages and towns… there are plenty of good local pubs on the way to keep your energy levels topped up.

Devon has two very different but equally breathtaking national parks in Exmoor and Dartmoor. Exmoor is on the north coast and is a place of tranquillity and wilderness, with its red deer and Exmoor ponies running wild. There are plenty of activities to get involved in including walking, canoeing, cycling, fishing, horse riding and rock climbing.

Dartmoor is the larger of the two National Parks. Highlights are Castle Drogo, Becky Falls, stumbling across ancient neolithic sites and mediaeval abbeys, canoeing on the River Dart, and of course the dramatic landscape topped by awe-inspiring, craggy stone tors.

Other attractions that make for intriguing and fun excursions are Overbeck’s Museum and tropical garden near Salcombe, a boat trip down the River Dart, A La Ronde – an eccentric collector’s paradise near Topsham and Babbacombe Model Village. Two annual events that have made Devon world famous, deservedly so, are the Sidmouth Folk Festival in August and Ottery St Mary’s Tar Barrelling on November 5^th, neither should be missed if you are in the area.

By far the best way to enjoy Devon is to talk to the locals and if you do happen to have a cream tea, remember that in Devon its cream on the scone before jam!

Before the mid-1800s, landowners who came into the city for business or for a season stayed in private homes or else were wealthy enough to own their own properties. Tourism had not developed to today’s degree and stage coaches were the main means of transport, the advent of the railway changed all this and larger numbers of visitors began taking short breaks in London from the 1830s onwards. Coaching inns supplied travellers with places to stay, with the George Inn – now a part of the National Trust – the last surviving hotel of its type in London.

To increase their own business, railways began to build hotels nears the stations, including many that survive still today, such as the Great Western Hotel at Paddington – now part of the Hilton chain. Most of the early hotels were centred around what is now London’s West End. Mivarts, a group of five houses was bought by the Claridge family in 1854 and transformed into the Claridge’s of today. Others include the Cavendish Hotel, Browns Hotel and Durrants, which all date from the early 1830s. As second homes became more expensive to purchase and maintain, more of the upper classes began to stay in luxury hotels when in town. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert graced Claridge’s with their presence on an 1860 visit to their granddaughter Princess Eugenie, who made the hotel her winter headquarters.

By the late 1800s and early 1900s, many of today’s most famous hotels had been remodelled or been built in their current forms, including Claridge’s, which was rebuilt from the ground up in its current art deco style in 1898. The Savoy holds the unique honour of being the first hotel to boast a bathroom in every room when it opened in 1889.

Many of the traditional grand hotels of the era remain on the coveted list of five-star hotels in London today, including Claridge’s, the Savoy, the Connaught, the Landmark, the Waldorf Hilton and the Langham hotels.

During the 1940s, displaced royalty from across Europe made their way to London as refugees, and many took up permanent residence at hotels such as Claridge’s. After the war, Hollywood stars were frequent guests at the grand hotels, although Katherine Hepburn was forced to use the staff entrance at Claridge’s after being barred from the lobby because of her insistence on wearing trousers – not considered proper attire for women of the era and a violation of the then strict dress code at Claridge’s.

Today, the grand hotels are still a place to see and be seen, visited not only by the upper crust of society from around the world but by people who appreciate the elegance, history, tradition and thoughtful care behind their imposing facades. Their appearance and style and a style are very much a throwback to an era of exuberance and grace that may never return again.
