Volcanic Features

Cliff Top Viewing

Roughly translated Los Hervideros means the boiling pits.  You may think this is quite a dramatic title for such a beautiful area of coastline, yet once you have witnessed nature at work here you will appreciate why the place has been so aptly named.  This is a true volcanic landscape; the roads themselves are carved through long solidified lava flows.  Try and time your visit to this area to coincide with high tide or even a full moon as then you will witness the full power and ferocity of nature at work.

The immensity of what awaits you here will astound you.  Winding footpaths work their way around the cliff tops and occasionally offer glimpses of the waves below.  Towards the edge of the cliff small balconies have been put in place to allow for viewing and photographic opportunities.  Please bear in mind that this is not a place for children to run freely, there is literally only an 18” small wall between the edge of the cliff top and the sheer drop into the ocean.

The Boiling Pots

The cliffs here are filled with a labyrinth of caves, formed by the bubbling lava of the last volcanic activity to take place on the island.  Vast chasms formed by a combination of molten lava and natural erosion work in conjunction with the ocean to provide one of nature’s more spectacular phenomenons.  The power of the ocean forces water into this intricate network of caves with such force, especially at high tide, that is appears as though the water itself is boiling furiously.

Occasionally when the sea is rough and the swell is heavy the boiling spray of the ocean is thrown several metres into the air with such an amazing roar it could be mistaken for the sound of a leviathan of the deep awakening from its slumbers.  Just as this is not a place for unaccompanied children, neither is it a place for those with a fear of heights, but for those with a love of the raw power of nature in her purest form it is an amazing place.

When the Alpine snow starts to melt on some of the lower slopes, it’s not unusual to see the emergence of mountain bike trails. Les Arcs is a classic example of this. If you’re really up for a high octane adrenalin rush, take the funicular up the mountain from Bourg St Maurice and let rip. The Alpine downhill trails can be pretty gnarly, so if you haven’t got a custom downhill bike or simply don’t want to risk damaging your own forks and wheels, then take advantage of the hire facility at the funicular station.

Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc
Generally considered one of the best hiking routes in the world, and probably the most famous long distance hike in Europe, the Tour du Mont Blanc is for serious trekkers only. The scenery is spectacular and incorporates lakes, glaciers and the great mountain itself, which you’ve also got the opportunity to ascend. There are huts to stay in en route, if you don’t want to carry your own tent, and hikers often report sightings of Chamois and Ibex which are rarely seen elsewhere in the wild. Be wary of the weather though and make sure you take the right kit, and if you’re not a very experienced hiker it’s worth considering a guide.

Once known as the Adriatic St Tropez, the former Yugoslavia has some incredible scenery that has remained unscathed by recent turbulent history. The Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO heritage site and is full of hidden gems for scenery seekers and thrill seekers alike. Granite peaks tower above the trees and sandy beaches line the shores, making this one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. But the centrepiece is The Tara river, which runs through the park and is home to one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe, containing a 20 mile white water rafting route.

The Cyclades contains over 200 individual islands, and each one is a picturesque gem in the still, turquoise Mediterranean waters that surround Greece. There are lot of tour operators taking advantage of this area of incredible natural beauty, offering different types of sailing excursions so you won’t have difficulty finding one to suit your preference. If you haven’t visited the Greek islands before this is the perfect way to start.

Walking

With the worst of the weather out of the way, it’s a great time to see Devon at its best. It’s a county best seen by foot, with stunning woodland and coastal walks to choose from. The Dart Valley Trail is a full 12 miles and takes you from Totnes to Dartmouth, but it’s easy enough to start at one end and double back. This route is full of wildlife which should be in full bloom by mid spring. The Greenway Estate, formerly owned by Agatha Christie is a particular highlight along the way, as are the villages of Dittisham and Ashprington.

Devon is simply unexplored if Dartmoor is not at least sampled. This enormous and inspiring moorland is an incredible place at any time of the year, but it has been known to be chilly during the winter months! With things warming up in the spring time it’s a great time to discover this stunning national park.

Devon is of course regarded as one of the most naturally beautiful parts of the country, and as such people want to spend their time outside when they are in Devon. Trying to discover a significant proportion of the county is rather challenging though given its size. One way to try to see a bit more is to jump on a bike. Don’t ride too fast though, or you might just miss the best bits!

The Tarka Trail is a wonderful route, and is long enough, at around 80 miles, to challenge even the most experienced cyclists. This circular trail that starts out at Barnstaple and passes through Exmoor before coming full circle.

For a slightly shorter ride, the 24 mile two castles trail may be more suitable. Journeying from Okehampton Castle to Launceston Castle, you also get a chance to dip a toe into neighbouring Cornwall.

Camping

Although Devon’s climate is relatively mild, some people might not fancy camping in the depth of winter. Spring is another matter altogether though, and the warm sun of spring is a common companion on spring mornings at campsites throughout the region at this time of year. There are opportunities in abundance if you fancy camping in Devon. You can find delightful woodland settings with just you and your tent, or you can track down a campsite in touching distance of the north Devon shore – famous for its Atlantic rollers and stunning coastal walks.

Surfing

This is another activity which only the most hardened enthusiasts continue to do throughout the winter. Surfing is a sport gaining popularity all the time, and Devon is blessed with a North coast which is home to some of the best waves in the UK.

North coast waves. To experience the North coast surf at its best, head to Woolacombe Bay. This stunningly natural bay is home to some great surf. Locals know to head down to the beach at high tide when the swell increases in size. It’s not always for the faint hearted though!

South Coast waves. The south coast is not known for its surf, but it can be found. Bantham Beach is worth a mention, and under the right conditions, the surf can be excellent. A word of warning though – the area of the beach which enjoys the best swell is also notable for a number of rip currents. This is not a surfing beach for the inexperienced.

Something for the kids

Devon is a family friendly county and if you love the great outdoors then you’re sure to find endless opportunities for the young ones.

Horse riding on Woolacombe Bay. If your children have riding lessons back at home, then why not allow them to experience a horse ride with a difference. A trip with across the sand at Woolacombe Bay can be pretty unbeatable. You have to be an experienced rider to be able to do this, but even if you don’t have bags of experience, there are still some fantastic rides to be had in the surrounding areas.

Exmoor Zoological Park. Most children love animals, and Exmoor Zoo is very popular with young children. It differs from most normal Zoo’s in that it markets itself as a family zoo. There are lots of smaller animals at the zoo which larger zoos tend to overlook, which makes it a bit more interesting than most standard zoos. There’s no lack of excitement though, with Cheetahs, and a rare Black Leopard.

Swimming.

It might sound somewhat basic, but there’s little that is as energising and rewarding as swimming in the ocean. Some people might find it a touch chilly in the spring months, but the truth is, the Sea on both Devon Coasts is perfectly manageable in spring time, and this is especially the case if you don a wetsuit. The north and south coast both offer beautiful beach upon beautiful beach for you to visit, and taking the plunge will feel cathartic after a chilly winter! Bigbury-On-Sea is a particular highlight and a fantastic beach for families looking for some safe bathing.

April

Foire of Paris is a big exhibition that takes place from 27th April to 8th of May 2012. It is an annual event held at the Porte de Versailles since 1904.  There are about 20 tradeshows based around world culture, home and environment and leisure and wellbeing.  April also sees the Marathon which starts on the Champs- Elysees on the 15th and finishes at Avenue Foch.  Lots of joggers, running around Paris for 42km. May

Well May gets off to a good start as the 1st is Labour day and everyone has the day off.  On this day the tradition is for French people to offer the Lily of the Valley to people who they love.  May is busy month for events as it is also home to the Jazz festival.  This takes place just outside Paris, in Versailles. If you love museums, some of them will be open on Saturday May 19th.  The museums all over Paris stay open all night.  The bonus is that it is free.  For tennis fans, go and watch The French Open at Roland Garros which starts in May, located in the 16th arrondissement.  Make sure you buy the tickets before you arrive or you will risk paying too much.

June

The 21st of June there is the Fete de la Musique takes place on the 21st of June.  It takes place every year and is a lively street music festival.  There are musicians in the streets, cafes and bars giving free performances. This is one of the best festivals in Paris and is one not to be missed especially if this is your first time to the city.  The free music continues at the Jazz Festival from 9th of June until the 29th of July where there are free concerts at  Chateau de Vincennes.

July

It all kicks off on the 1st of July with the Fete des Loges, a funfair at the Esplanade des Loges, Saint Germain en Laye.  The funfair lasts until the 12th of August.  On the 3rd of July, there is the Carnaval Tropical de Paris which takes place on the Champs Elysees.  There is also the Festival du cinema which is from the 30th of June to the 10th of July. If you are in France in July, you should stay around for the 14th of July – Bastille Day. The biggest event all summer, the is also a national holiday and the French really do paint the town red.  There are lots of parties and a magnificent fireworks display in the evening.

Armação de Pêra
