There is a choice of two beginner’s areas with Vestlia being the best and cruising red runs for the more experienced. Apres-ski is limited during the week but kicks off at the weekend.

La Plagne, France

The slopes are a little more gentle than the European Alps and the long trails are the perfect place to practice turns. The resort is large but does not lack in atmosphere – it’s very friendly and picturesque with absolutely loads going on aside from the skiing. Sainte Foy Tarentaise, France

A small and charming resort with a deservedly good reputation for empty slopes, high-quality accommodation and a laid-back atmosphere. The ski area is tiny compared to most of the other Alpine resorts, which make it less daunting for beginners. The nursery slopes are very welcoming, and there’s a long and gentle beginner slope higher up for you to practise on. Night life here is non existent so perhaps this is a good resort for novice couples looking for a romantic skiing experience. You can reach Ste Foy Tarentaise by flying to Chambery (about one hour transfer), Lyon or Grenoble (around two hours transfer).

Soldeu, Andorra

Hailed as one of Europe’s best beginner resorts, Soldeu has two extensive nursery areas and plenty of terrain for beginners in the rolling slopes both above and below the tree line. There are a number of excellent British or English speaking instructors and once you progress there’s also a good range of slightly harder runs.  What the resort lacks in high mountain atmosphere it makes up for in good weather (lots of sun) and exuberant night life, which gets pretty lively.  Andorra is a duty-free zone so it’s also inexpensive. All in all an unpretentious and welcoming resort.

Alpe d’Huez, France

One of the Alps’ best known and biggest resorts, Alpe d’Huez is close to Grenoble airport so it’s easy to get to from the UK as well as being great for beginners. It’s not pretty (thanks to the 60s and 70s architecture) but is ringed by an impressive array of beginner slopes. There’s a British ski school here to nurse you through your first turns and plenty of accommodation, from low to high end. It is a snow sure resort and as most of it faces south you’ll get lovely long sunny days of skiing, especially in Spring. The resort centre has a plethora of excellent restaurants and many great après-ski venues.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

Seriously gorgeous – like something straight off a chocolate box – Saas Fee’s stunning scenery and secluded beginner’s area is ideal for novices. Set beneath mighty 4000m peaks and a big glacier it is a car-free town with a gorgeous village centre which has kept its old charm. There are spacious nursery slopes close to the village and plenty of wide open pistes to practice on as well as an excellent lift system. Look for accommodation near the slopes as it does spread over a large area. The atmosphere is chilled out, the people welcoming, and the night life is fun but not over the top.

Bankso, Bulgaria

Bansko is the newest and most modern of the Bulgarian ski resorts and is set in a World Heritage Site surrounded by spectacular mountains. Situated at the base of the Pirin Mountains it offers breath taking alpine scenery combined with the traditional spirit of a small town. The ski lift system is bang up to date and easy to use and there is a good range of nursery slopes. Skiing here is excellent value as it is cheaper than most of the other resorts featured here without losing any of the quality.

This arch designed by Jean Chagrin, and based on the Arch of Titus in Rome. Major academic sculptors of France represented in the sculpture of the Arc de Triumph. It is adorned with many reliefs, most of them venerating the emperor’s battles. At the top of the arch are 3- shields and every shield consists of the name of Napoleon’s successful battles.

Beneath the arch is the “Tomb of the unknown Soldiers placed, who died during the First World War. It has the first undying flame lit in Western and Eastern Europe. It burns in the memory of the dead, who never recognized. A big ceremonial held here every 11^th of November. The sarcophagus put in the chapel on the first floor of the arch on 1920, and put in its final resting place on 1921.

Greet shopkeepers, restaurant workers and people working in places you visit like museums, parks, theaters, etc. Say hello upon arriving and goodbye before you go.

Always treat the locals with respect and kindness. Forget that others have said time again that Parisians are rude. They are simply misunderstood. Instead, deal with Parisians the same way you want them to deal with you.

Avoid talking in a loud voice whether you are in a restaurant, café, museum, store or simply walking on the streets. The French are more reserved and do not fancy loud noises.

Follow the rules

When it says picture taking is prohibited, keep your camera. Dress appropriately when going to restaurants, the theater and other places with a prescribed dress code. Read the signs and follow them to a ‘T.’ Remember not to be late! Respect their laws and their culture if you want them to respect you.

Look for a toilet and not a bathroom

When you need to use the john or the loo, don’t ask where the bathroom is. Parisians might think you want to shower or take a bath. For the French, toilet and bathroom are two different rooms. Instead ask where the nearest toilet it. Say “Ou se trouve la toilette, s’il vous plait?”

Start the touristic route by visiting the dominant spot in the mountains, known as Aiguille du Midi. This observatory is the closest touristic spot to the peak of Europe, the Mont Blanc. You can get there by a two stage cable car. The first leaves the center of the city and in ten minutes gets to the Plan de l’Aiguille, at 2317 meters high. And the second will take you to the Aiguille du midi, at 3842 meters high, in over ten minutes. The feeling caused by the air there can make you feel a little dizzy, but the scenery is already so breathtaking that you’ll soon forget the thin air.

One of the routes has its start at the base of the Aiguille du Midi, and although there are many signs of warnings not to cross certain points, it is truly trilling to walk on these paths.

And if during the day all the attractions are on the mountains and on the snow, at night Chamonix will enchant you even more, offering a wide variety of restaurants and cozy places. Since the city is very close to the border of Italy and Swiss, there are always people from these countries over there. To walk on the sweet little streets in the evening is a must.

Let’s start at the center, where there are the Champs Elysees. Take the Subway (Line 1) and drop off at the Charles de Gaulle Etoile. When climbing the stairs of the station you will soon find the monumental Arc de Triomphe (at your right). Climb to the top to see the main avenues of Paris converging on the Place Charles de Gaulle. One is the Avenue Foch, considered the most expensive square meter of the city, home to some of the rich and famous in Paris.

Then take the Avenue Champs Elysees, the main in town. It extends for about four kilometers, connecting, at the far west, the Arc de Triomphe (located in the Place Charles de Gaulle) to, at the east end, the Place de la Concorde. Along the Champs Elysees there are dozens of shops, restaurants, galleries and fast food, the venue Lido, and especially, people of all kinds.

This is the main runway of Paris. After crossing the square known as Rond Point Avenue,  the avenue is flanked by a nice garden with several kiosks offering water, ice cream and other refreshments. If you want to take a break on the walk, cross the street and get to the subway station of Champs Elysees – Clemenceau and take time to visit the beautiful buildings of the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, always with great expositions.

- Louvre Museum, Paris. A stroll through the Louvre is a must stop for those going to Paris. - Museum of Miniatures, Lyon. Situated in the old quarter of Saint Jean, this museum is called the Museum of Miniatures and of cinema decoration. It features over 100 everyday situations and scenarios depicted in miniature. Lyon is the city where the brothers Lois and Auguste Lumiére invented the cinema. The decorations that can be seen in the museum were used for the first films. There is a projection room, also from the beginning, and many objects that were used to record movies. The museum was created in 1990 and since 2005 is now set in a beautiful XVI century building, donated by a fanatical collector of miniatures. All the objects are very well preserved, and the concept is unique in France. The idea is to showcase the most secret parts of movies. Entrance to the museum costs 7 Euros and 5.50 with student card. It opens every day from 10 am, except on Mondays, when only it opens in the afternoon.

- Rodin Museum, Paris. The museum has free entrance and it has a garden where there are some of his most representative works such as The Thinker, which of course, is surrounded by a beautiful rose bushes. There you will find two floors which highlight the works of Rodin’s youth and of his most intense maturity. It is right next to the Invalides, on a side street and on an area that is very well signposted. Its opening hours are until six in the evening, but the gardens are open until 7 pm. For art lovers.

- Musee de la Mer, Biarritz. Enchanting aquarium situated in front of the “Rocher de la Vierge” Be caution of the time, since it closes at lunch time: 09:30 am to 12:30 pm and 02:00 pm to 06:00 pm. In the summer time the opening hours are longer, even until midnight. Be sure not to miss rhe time of feeding the seals: 10.30 am and 05.00 pm. Also, the bar has a spectacular panoramic view of the “Rocher de la Vierge”.

Along the Atlantic coast there is a stretch of gorgeous beaches to choose from. La Grande Plages is the main beach in Biarritz, a popular bustling environment, great for people watching and soaking up a very European atmosphere. Under the lighthouse La Chambre d’amour is nestled amongst rocks and ancient caves, a quieter beach whose name is derived following a tragic-love story. One which tells of two young lovers who fell asleep in one of caves and were swept out to sea when the tide came in. Walk a little further up and you will meet the Marinella one of the larger beaches which is a great spot for families, the beach is long and provides plenty of opportunity for various activity. Sunbathe on soft golden grains, or come closer to the sea and you have a huge area of perfect sand for building castles and moats! The beaches are surrounded by greenery as well as a number of cafes for when hunger bites!

Surf and sea lovers are in for a real treat with the amazing waves that hit the shore along the south-west coast. A swimmers playground, where endless fun and games can be had, another factor that makes this resort so popular amongst tourists and surfers. If you come in August, don’t miss the Rip Curl championships that take place on the beaches around Biarritz, Bidart and Anglet, the night competitions are a great experience, where you can lie back on the beach and watch the lit up surfers riding waves, fun whether surf interests you or not!

The new winds of emigration have brought also great numbers of Muslims. It is no coincidence that the catholic cathedral of Strasbourg, Notre Dame, is a highlighted reference on the horizon of this city of low buildings. From anywhere in the city, one can see its pointy arrow touching the sky.

The cathedral had its origin on a previous roman church, from which remain its crypt and the apse of the choir. What exists today was built between 1277 and 1439, in pure French gothic style. The main nave is majestic, with 32 meters high. You’ll soon notice as well the wonderful and colorful stained glasses. As well as the astronomic clock of the cathedral, built between 1838 and 1842, replacing another one from the XVI century. This amazing machine, other than measuring time, calculates the lunar and solar eclipses.

However what we guarantee you that will simply take your breath away is going up the Cathedral tower. To get to the superior platform, on the only base of the needle, you will need to climb 326 steps, something like a building of twenty and some floors. But it truly is worth it: on the top you can simply see the entire city.

You will see the medieval city and the ‘colombage’ houses that seem to form an immense urban manger. To the side, you will see the ‘petit France’, with its channels. On the opposite side, you’ll see the Germanic parks from the XVIII century and on the end the new buildings of the European institutions.

As an university town, some of the most prominent buildings are the faculties of Grenoble. Among the most famous are the Université Joseph Fourier, dedicated to the study of science, technology and  medicine; the Université  Pierre  Mendès  France, specialized in social sciences; the Université Stendhal, famous for language courses  and literature, and the renowned  National Polytechnique Institut of  Grenoble, one of the best engineering schools in France. Even those who are not a student will get excited by the huge and lively crowd of young people who  seem to be everywhere on the streets of Grenoble.

One of the nicest corners of Grenovle is on the margins of the River Isére. The City Hall, although is not a tourist attraction, never fails to  go unnoticed, due to its  beauty and architecture. Start at the  Musée  Saint-Remi, Basilique du Palais and Tau. The latter was built in 1690, all in stone, and served as the residence of the bishops of the city, which by then had more power and influence that many politicians. It is located beside the cathedral, and among the relics that are in it you will be able to see a cup of the 12th century, used for communion of the kings of France, and a crucifix used by Charlemagne.

Champagne is nothing more than a sparkling wine, but it is precisely those bubbles, and gas that forms in the  bottle, through a process as old and as strict, which gives its special flavor. Since the time of the Roman Empire, when France was still known  as Galia, Reims has been highlighted as a place of manufacture of  some of the best wines of Europe, which has been refined over time and eventually giving rise to the famous  Champagne. Stores that specialize  in “Vente de Champagne”, can be found in various parts of the city, selling from common tags  (common to the French, of course), to the more refined.

As it is known, the name of the region where Reims is located is called Champagne, so it was only natural that that famous drink that began to be manufactured  here earned the name of this part  of the country. With the success of the drink, everybody started wanting to make Champagne, which led to the creation  of legal measures  to prevent the misuse of the name. Currently anywhere in the  world  can be produced “sparkling wine”, but for this product to be labeled Champagne, it must necessarily be produced in Champagne, France.

Rouen is situated on the river Seine and its distance from the capital of France is only 137 km. Start your city tour covering the area known as Vieux Rouen. It is an area of the city that consists of narrow, winding streets full of historic buildings of typical architecture, small shops, craftsmen, nice restaurants, and inviting curiosities around every corner.

One of the best known streets in this part of town is the Saint Roman. Also visit the Place du Vieux-Marche, the central town square, and the Tour Jeanne d’Arc, the observation tower, where you will find a beautiful view of the city.

Among these sympathetic and narrow streets of Vieux Rouen, one gets the impression of  walking  in an open mall, but with its decoration totally based  in medieval times. Small and inviting restaurants  serving  typical  dishes  Norman, there you will find shops and boutiques, as well as museums, churches and an endless succession of corners that are as fascinating as they are inviting.

A good option is to have lunch at Courone, a restaurant housed in a typical 14th century  building  (Place Vieux Marché 31), or more in regard to Le Rouennais (Rue Pie 5). Then visit the Eglise St-Maclou church built in Gothic style, famous for its paneled doors of the 16th century. Its construction began in 1200 and was completed only in 1521.

Not far away lies the Le Musée des Secq Tournelles museum installed in a  building  of the 15th century. Its fourteen thousand items  were collected by an aristocrat in Paris and later donated to the city of Rouen, and they represent the various forms  of Norman arts, and many other objects from the Roman period  until the 19th century.

A highlight of the building are the towers the Tour de Beurre, which contains a carillon of 56 bells, and the Tour Lanterne, which is 150 meters high and was completed only in 1877, with the use of 740 tons of iron and bronze. Also worth mentioning is its magnificent choir, the transept, the beautiful roses of the 16th century, and even the curious tomb guarding the heart of the English King  Richard  the Lionheart, one of the vestiges  of medieval English presence  in France.

When studying the history of Rouen and of the Normandy region  you can even consider that the British invasions of France seem to be almost an attempt to return to the origins and often the name of William the Conqueror  (Guillaume le Conquérant for the French ), appears in the construction of castles throughout England. It happens that William was Norman, and was exactly in Rouen that he and his warriors  came to invade and conquer  England  in the final in the year of 1066.

Of course, back then there were no  nations  formed as we now know as England or France, but only the territories, which were disputed  by different people, like the Normans, Saxons and Vikings.

Rouen attracts many visitors, not just for its art and architecture,  but also because of its history. Many of these visitors  are born  and grow up hearing about  Joan of Arc, and its exciting history. Although she was not born  there, this city is forever associated with  the saga of the young woman  because  her last  days were spent in Rouen. It thanks to the Maid of Orleans, and her life of faith, struggle, death and freedom, that this city is now considered  one of the cradles  of France, as an independent nation.

Fifth biggest city of France, Nice is the only small metropolis of the Riviera, 30 Km from the Italy border, while Paris is 930 Km from there.

Surrounded by chic stores and conversable Ferraris at all places, the city has its own accent – and curiously the hero of Italy’s unification Giuseppe Garibaldi was born there.

The Italians call Nice of “Nizza” (the balneary belonged to Italy until 1860), the Americans up to this day think of Nice as a “nice” city, but it were the English that over a century ago transformed the place in the Victorian Era, time in which being English was almost a synonym to embrace tourism.

The queen herself visited Nice in 1895, but before her visit, her subjects financed the construction of a seaside walk of 5km long, the Promenade des Anglais, built from 1822, under the inspiration of the Anglican vicar Lewis Way.
