1.     Browse the Grand Bazaar

This isn’t called the Grand Bazaar for nothing. Encompassing 60 ‘streets’ and around 5,000 shops and stalls this vast historic market buzzes with life and Turkish atmosphere. Even if you’re not spending there is enough to see here to occupy the best part of an afternoon as you wander between stalls selling fine silver and gold jewellery, furniture, carpets, Turkish ceramics, leather goods, hookahs and many other locally hand crafted goods.

2.   Visit the exact centre of the Byzantine Empire

At the heart of the Sultanahmet district in the very centre of Old Istanbul (or Constantinople, as it once was) stands a fragment of the Million Stone. This monument marked the ‘zero point’ from which the distances to all of the cities that comprised the Byzantine Empire were measured. Erected in the Fourth Century the Million Stone remained in place for eleven hundred years before being lost to excavations in the Fifteenth Century and it was not until the 1960’s that fragments of this historically significant monument were rediscovered.

3.     Cross the Golden Horn on the Galata Bridge

Istanbul’s ‘Golden Horn’ is a roughly crescent-shaped estuary of the Bosphorus which forms the city’s harbour. Linking the districts of Beyoğlu and Eminönü on either side of this inlet is the Galata Bridge. By day the bridge is populated by city dwellers making their way to and from their respective districts, as well as the occasional optimistic angler and a variety of wandering traders peddling tourist trinkets and food. 4.     Sample ‘Park Life’, Istanbul-style

In the Eminönü district beneath the Topkapi Palace (one of Istanbul’s must-visit attractions, but sadly not free) lies Gülhane Park. Formerly part of the palace gardens, this sprawling municipal park is a haven of tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of city streets. Exploration of Gülhane Park rewards you with statues, an ornamental fountain and fish pond, a cluster of coffee shops and wooden benches upon which to relax, recharge your batteries and admire the greenery and flowers.

Just a kilometre north of the Galata Bridge on the Beyoğlu (southern) side of the Bosphorus you’ll find the Istanbul Modern. A converted warehouse, this modern art gallery opened in 2004 and is a triumph of minimalist design. The gallery features regularly changing exhibits from both Turkish and foreign artists on the ground floor, whilst the permanent collection resides on the first floor. 8.      Be awestruck by a panoramic view of all Istanbul

If you’re on the Asian side of the city and are feeling energetic or have plenty of time for an ascending stroll, climb to the top of Camlica Hill (the higher of two hills here). Here, among the picturesque pine trees and flowers in a park that’s 267 meters above sea level, you will be rewarded with truly staggering views of the Bosphorus and the city beyond. For best results, ensure you’re at the crest of Camlica Hill for sunset and enjoy the magic as the light changes, evening descends and Istanbul becomes an ocean of twinkling light.

9.     Head underground to inspect the plumbing

Beneath Istanbul there are many cisterns: ancient underground reservoirs for the collection and storage of water to supply the city. Istanbul’s historic cisterns are renowned for their architecture, the most famous and impressive example being the Basilica Cistern under Sultanahmet Square. 1. Stonehenge

A circular formation of large standing stones, Stonehenge can be found in Wiltshire and is once of the most historic monuments in the UK. Dating back to around 3100 BC the structure was built in three stages and is estimated to have takes over thirty million hours to construct.

Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, the stunning structure is a symbol of eternal love. Thousands of artisans and craftsmen worked to create this sight of pure beauty and the design was completed around 1653. The white domed marble mausoleum is one of the most distinctive features of the building and passages from the Qur’an decorate the exterior. The interior is just as grand with semiprecious and precious gemstones creating an elegant and sophisticated effect. A beautiful 300-metre Mughal garden perfectly compliments the surrounding area and a magnificent relecting pool, cleverly reflects the Taj Mahal.

4. Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour and is one of the most famous sites in the world. A gift from France to the US in recognition of a friendship established during the American Revolution, the statue has since become a symbol of freedom and democracy. Designed by artist Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculpture was completed in France in 1884, then dissembled and shipped to the US, arriving in 1885.

The date of the American Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) is inscribed on the tablet of law and the torch is a symbol of enlightenment. The seven rays of the crown represent the seven seas and continents of the world, whereas the broken chains at the statue’s feet represent a goddess free from servitude and oppression. Visitors can actually climb inside the crown and enjoy the views from 25 windows which reportedly symbolise gem stones and rays from heaven.

5. The Vatican

The Vatican City is the world’s smallest state (110 acres) and is a little enclave within the historic city of Rome. Ruled by the Pope – currently Benedict XVI – the Vatican City is at the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church and is the sovereign territory of the Holy See. Home to around 800 people, the city is thriving and is visited by many people every year who flock to see some of the most beautiful art work ever created. Roseland Peninsula

A sleepy backwater planted with lush palms and subtropical vegetation, Roseland Peninsula is edged by low cliffs with fine sea views from St Anthony’s Head. There are idyllic creeks and sheltered beaches to explore, as well as sailing boats and kayaks to hire. The secluded churches of St Just-in-Roseland and St Anthony-in-Roseland are also worth viewing. The peninsula can be comfortably toured by bicycle, and may be reached via the year-round Falmouth–St Mawes passenger ferry. From St Mawes, a summer ferry crosses to Place, not far from St Anthony Head.

Royal Cornwall Museum

This museum is a cornucopia of Cornish culture, embracing everything from Bronze Age pottery to Newlyn art. The minerals display, based on a collection made 200 years ago, is of international significance.

You can also admire the impressive collection of fossils.

Botanical and zoological specimens are beautifully represented by items as diverse as stuffed puffins, butterflies, shells and pressed plants. Regular and varied exhibitions are held here.

Polperro

At peak times, this classic Cornish fishing village gets rather too commercialized and crowded, but visit out of season, or step out early in the morning, and you can appreciate its authentic charm. A long main street, mostly traffic-free, leads down alongside a stream and quaint cottages to a huddle of houses around the harbour. An old pilchard factory holds an absorbing Smuggling and Fishing Museum.

St Mawes Castle

Though the lesser of the two 16th-century artillery forts at the mouth of the Carrick Roads Estuary (the other is Pendennis), this castle is better preserved and sports heraldic devices and Latin inscriptions dedicated to Henry VIII and Edward VI. The interior has living quarters and gun rooms displaying ships’ cannons from the 1800s, and an impressive bronze “saker” cannon of about 1560, cast by Venetian gunmaster Alberghetti and recovered from the sea off the Devon coast.

Fowey

Climbing up the west bank of the River Fowey, this was one of the foremost ports of medieval England and is still a busy harbour town. Most of the maritime activity, however, is now to do with pleasure boats anchored in the estuary. It is worth hiring a boat to enjoy the beauty of the river.

Truro Cathedral

Cornwall’s capital is overshadowed by the soaring spires of its cathedral, a neo-Gothic confection completed in 1910.

The faux-medieval style is the cause of much debate in this predominantly Georgian city, but there is no denying the impact of its impressive interior.

The Robartes Memorial, showing effigies of a merchant and his wife propped on their elbows, is one of the eye-catching monuments within. Free guided tours are offered in summer.

Trelissick Garden

This lovely, extensive garden has lawns, flowerbeds and hollows filled with rare plants and shrubs, sprawling parkland and miles of woodland paths with panoramic views of the River Fal. Late April, early May and September are the best times to visit, though there is always something to see. A gallery shows Cornish craftwork.

Cotehele House

The excellent condition of this Tudor abode is due to its abandonment by its owners, the Edgcumbe family, who left it intact for a more accessible home outside Plymouth. It remained with the family until the National Trust took over in 1947. The house has original furniture, armour and a collection of embroideries and tapestries, best seen on a bright day as the rooms have no electric light.

Starting with your arrangements for travel you want to make sure you have all your documents in at very least one place. Preferably everyone you are travelling with should have a copy of everyone’s travel documents so that should any get lost you will all be able to travel still. Make sure you have printed out all your travel documents and have your passports to hand. Many airlines now let you pre-print your boarding cards and this is highly recommended as it lets you skip at least one stage of the check in process. Before you leave make sure that you have confirmed your flights and that you have weighed your luggage.

Many airlines still require you to confirm your flights at least 24 hours before your departure so make sure you have done so if you need too. When it comes to your luggage we’d recommended buying and then taking with you a luggage scale so that you can ensure your luggage remains within weight at all times. This can save you a lot of time and money wasted if you either have to pay fines or remove items from your luggage.

When you arrive at the airport you need to make sure you firstly head to the right terminal. This is of course fairly obvious but airports are often maze like warrens and it is fairly easy to get lost. Once you are at the right terminal check the boards to make sure that your flight is on time and which check in desk you need to head to. Check that you have all your passports and all your personal belongings and head to the check in desk. Providing you have weighed your luggage and don’t have anything that isn’t disallowed you should be able to sail through this part without trouble.

From here head to the security checks and keep your passports and boarding cards close to hand. Before you arrive at the security make sure you have removed all your liquids from your bags and that you haven’t got any sharp metal items anywhere. In addition it’s a good idea to put all your change and other metallic items in your carry-on luggage so that you aren’t delayed going through the security scanner. If you have electrical goods like laptops then keep them accessible as you will need to let them be scanned separately. Taking these steps will make it a lot easier for you to pass through security in a quick and timely manner saving a lot of hassle.

Finally you’re ready to head to your gate, after, of course, stopping by the duty free. Again if you have your boarding cards and everything else ready this shouldn’t cause you any problems. With that in mind enjoy your travels and have a great time.

Skiing is probably one of the most pleasant winter activities there is. The best place for this activity is by far and away the Alps as it offers some truly fast runs and relatively cheap hourly hire.

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is definitely not for the faint of heart. Strapping a plank of wood to your feet and careering down the pistes is an unbridled and unrivalled thrill. If you’ve never tried it before all of the big resorts offer tuition so never fear. The best places to snowboard are either Canada or the Alps for the brilliant mix of runs and plenty of off-piste opportunities. If your already an expert snowboarder you might consider trying helicopter snowboarding. This involves being flown to the top of a mountain and jumping out of a helicopter before careering down a mountain of untouched snow. This is the epitome of extreme snowboarding and only recommended for the true expert.

Snowmobiling

Whilst you might not consider snowmobiling a sport you’d be surprised at how many races and tournaments take place each year. Snowmobiling can either be a great way to see the scenery or a fantastic thrill ride as you race along precipices and through woods. Snowmobiling offers the perfect blend of winter sports and motor sports and we heartily recommend you give it a go. The best places to try it are the Upper Peninsula in Michigan or Quebec. Though for something closer to home Scandinavia offers some fantastic snowmobiling opportunities set in beautiful wooded landscapes.

Sledding and tobogganing

Sledding and tobogganing might seem like something you just do in your spare time at a winter sports retreat, with a cheap piece of plastic sliding to sit on while you career down small slopes. But this activity actually has a lot more to offer if you feel like a slightly faster thrill. Most resorts have some kind of specialised sledding or tobogganing runs and if you want to try it you can try the full blown toboggan runs where you have a purpose built ice slide for the pleasure. Switzerland and Austria are considered to have the best European tobogganing slopes catering to both young and older alike. If you want to try some serious tobogganing though you need to head to the Rockies with its international runs and serious thrill runs – not for the faint of heart.

The word “Baikal” came from the Turk language. “Bai” means “wealthy” and “kul” means “lake”. So “Baikal” is a “wealthy lake” and this precise name fits perfectly to describe its abundant beauty, unique flora and fauna, and limitless opportunities for travelers. Scientists are still debating the lake’s origin. Some are trying to prove that it emerged as a result of tectonic processes of orogeny, while others think it has been formed as a result of the earth’s crust gradually subsiding. So far nobody has been proved right. But a known fact, however, is that Baikal is the world’s deepest fresh water lake and that it holds 20% of the world surface fresh water.
It would take all the rivers of the world – Volga, Don, Dnepr and Yenisei, Ural and Ob, Ganges and Orinoko, Amazon and Thames, Seine and Oder – nearly one year to fill lake Baikal’s basin. It would take four hundred years for all the rivers, streams and brooks now flowing into the Siberian lake-sea to perform the task.

The Baikal area is a veritable treasure trove of mineral resources. Sables thrive in the region’s taiga; valuable fur animals live in the surrounding mountains and valleys; and birds and fish abound in the forests and rivers of the area. The nearby Dauro-Mongolian steppes are very fertile. There are hot springs in the vicinity of Lake Baikal. The lake acts as a powerful generator and bio-filter producing this water.

The size of the lake is so enormous that the locals call it the sea. This “sea” is rapidly growing with the average speed of 2 cm (0.8 in) per year. Baikal is believed to be an ocean in the future; some say that Baikal will be a starting point of a new great ocean across Asia.

The Baikal Lake is also one of Asia’s holy places. People through over the centuries worshiped the lake and believed in its magic powers. One can still see the unique carvings and remains of the ritual buildings, constructed by the lake by the local tribes thousands years ago. The original inhabitants of this area were Eskimo (who now live in Alaska). In the 9th century, the Mongols came from the south, mixed with Eskimos and formed a new nation – the Buryats (Mongolian language group), who practiced Buddhism. The idea of freedom from serfdom and the promise of free land have driven many Russians to Siberia between the 17th and the 19th centuries. Baikal lake was discovered by Russians in 1643. The forts on the lake became an important link in the trade route between Russia and China.

The traditions and customs of the lake people is a mix of traditional beliefs, Buddhism and Christian Orthodox customs.

Buryats believe in Spirits livings with us, and that every mountain and river has its own spirit. Humans can’t survive without the help of the spirits; therefore they should respect them and show this respect in every way.
