Iran is a wonderful tourist destination and the perfect spot for those looking to experience a new culture. Tourism in Iran has been increasing over the years and one can expect a continues increase in the country’s popularity with respect to tourism as a result there are plenty of vacation travel deals available for those who want to come to Iran. There are plenty of lovely destinations like Kashan,Tehran, Esfahan,Shiraz that one can visit on a trip to Iran. For a memorable trip to Iran, one must keep the following things in mind –

The best time to travel

Iran suffers from extreme climatic conditions while it experiences uncomfortably hot summers when temperature along the gulf coast can go up as high as fifty degree Celsius while it is quite cold during the winters. The best time to travel to Iran is dependent on your destination but spring and autumn are the best time to visit most parts of Iran but on the other hand if you want to visit the Persian Gulf coast, then it would be best to opt look for vacation travel deals in winter; during winter though the nights are cold the days are rather pleasant.

Travel –

There are plenty of cheap flights to Iran, besides Tehran one can also choose to land at Shiraz as well. Internet booking services of Iranian airlines within Iran are often not the best option therefore if you want to book tickets within Iran, it would be best to opt for travel agents. Flights within Iran are quite cheap, these cheap flights make travelling from one destination to another affordable and fast. Flights are a good option in Iran even for budget travelers. Unlike other countries, flight tickets in Iran have a fixed price as a result there are no monetary benefits of booking early. Transport within Iran is quite affordable and easy as there are many options like taxi, bus and car; owing to low fuel prices the cost of travelling within Iran is quite low.

Money matters –

Very few places in Iran will accept credit cards or debit cards. One needs to bring good old cash to make purchases. While it would not be possible to carry your entire cash in Rials, one can carry Euros and have them exchanged for Rials. Earlier dollars would serve the purpose as well but owing to recent history, many banks and business houses do not exchange dollars. ATMs in Iran do not accept foreign issued credit cards therefore one must carry extra cash into the country; getting cash through cards is not easy. Though Iran faces high inflation, it is still quite affordable even for the backpackers.

One of the seven Emirates of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, is more liberal compared to its counterparts. This is one of the reasons behind its popularity as a tourist destination. There are a number of wonderful modern attractions in Dubai that one can enjoy. Those who want to explore the old Dubai should visit Al Ahmadiya School at Deira. It was the first school built in Dubai. It has been recently restored and entrance to this historical building is free. The Bastakiya District with its traditional styled buildings gives a real feel of Old Dubai. The Bastakiya District has many art galleries and cafes which one can explore at leisure.

The Shindagah District with its open museums is a popular tourist destination as well. If you want comprehensive knowledge on the social history of Dubai and the other Emirates then Dubai museum is the place to visit. Those who want to gape at traditional architecture should pay a visit to the Jumeirah mosque. It is one of the largest mosques in the city and is a fascinating example of Islamic architecture; it is also one of the few mosques of Dubai which is open to non-Muslims.

While old Dubai is fascinating, it is the new Dubai that is the main attraction for tourists. The latest addition to the list of attractions in Dubai is Burj Dubai or Burj Khalifa, world’s tallest building. Needless to say, Burj Khalifa dominates the Dubai skyline; the observation deck of the tower is placed halfway and not at the top of the tower but one can still get a fantastic view of the city below. Tickets are available at different rates depending on one’s willingness to wait, those in hurry have to pay a lot more than normal tickets so space your time accordingly.

The Dubai Fountain at the Dubai Lake is the world’s largest dancing fountain. It is a must see in Dubai. A show is conducted every half an hour on weekdays as well as weekends but timings are different. The fountain and light along with different kinds of music is a lot of fun to experience and is a part of most holiday packages.

While there are many more activities and places to experience in Dubai. One just cannot leave Dubai without experiencing some great shopping. It would be best to opt for one of the many vacation travel deals during winter as that is when the great Dubai shopping festival takes place. While in Dubai, one can look forward to purchasing electronics, clothes and of gold. One can get a lot of variety in Dubai especially in gold. If you are shopping at the souks, make sure you haggle to get a good price but haggling is not practiced at the malls.

Located in the Middle East, Jordan is fast becoming a popular destination among tourists and the town of Ajlun is usually on one’s itinerary during a visit to Jordan. Jordan vacation travel deals always include the amazing town of Ajlun located in Northern Jordan. While tour operators take tourists to Ajlun in hired cars from Amman, one can also choose to visit Ajlun on their own even if they are on a tight budget.

Buses from Mahata Shamal bus station in Amman leave for Ajlun everyday. These buses usually leave the station once get filled up. Therefore, it would be best to take an early morning to reach your destination. Take the bus at around 8 o’clock as buses become scarce as the day rolls by.

One of the major tourist attractions in Ajlun is the Ajlun castle. The buses usually drop tourists in the centre of the Ajlun. Since Ajlun is a small town it is not very difficult to get to the castle from there. One can see the castle from the city centre as they are roughly 3 km away from it. One can opt to walk the distance or hire a taxi.

If you think you’ll need the taxi while coming back as well then you must hire the taxi for the entire day as chances of getting a taxi from the castle are rather grim. However, one must settle the matter of fare beforehand with the taxi driver to avoid getting ripped off later. If you are not travelling with a tour operator, it would be best to find out about taxi fares beforehand, the information will prove to be very helpful.

The castle is an Islamic fortress which was built during the crusades and it is located on the top of a mountain. The castle was built to protect Jordan as well as Syria’s commercial routes and trade against the crusaders who came from the north as well as the west.

The fortress was quite successful in its defense as the crusaders could never breach its defense. It would be wise enough to carry a pair of binoculars if you are visiting the castle as it gives a wonderful view of the surroundings.  One can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Jordan valley from the top of the castle.

After paying a visit to the Ajlun castle, it would make sense to pay a visit to the nearby Ajlun nature reserve. It is located in the nearby Ajlun highlands. The reserve is full of pistachio and oak trees. It was established for captive breeding of Roe deer. The reserve is close to thirteen sq km in area and one can camp in the reserve as well. The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature has set aside special area in the reserve for camping along with hiking trails.

When you think about Christmas, do you immediately envision another holiday at Grandma’s, a turkey and stuffing, and caroling by the Christmas tree? If this image comes to mind all too easily, maybe it’s time to do something different this holiday season. Try to recapture the meaning behind the holiday and visit a city where Christmas all but began, or travel in search of Santa Claus as close to the North Pole as you can fathom.

Bethlehem Church of the Nativity

Bethlehem

The center of Bethlehem is Manger Square, which is flanked by the Church of the Nativity, where Jesus was born. The church is a popular destination, especially its Grotto of the Nativity, a cavern underneath the church with a silver star where the miraculous baby Jesus laid his head. Nearby are the Shepherds’ Fields, where the Bible says shepherds saw the star and heard God’s voice when Jesus was born.

Nativity Facade, La Sagrada Familia

Spain

If you want to witness the nativity scene all over again, head to Spain, where some towns’ citizens reenact the nativity with live performances. They will dress up in costumes reminiscent of biblical times and recreate the birth of baby Jesus in the manger. Visitors can tour these performances, which may take place in front of many different homes or businesses on a given night.

New York Christmas

It is also a Spanish tradition to set up elaborate nativity scenes in homes, schools, and workplaces, and groups of friends and family members often save props as the years go by to add to their nativity scenes. Some households even forego the Christmas tree in favor of a nativity scene.

New York City

The Big Apple certainly has it all, especially when it comes to Christmas. You will enjoy skating at Rockefeller Center under the immense, shining Christmas tree. Everyone will get a kick out of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Rockettes. The window displays at the big department stores are charming and delightful. Grab a hot chocolate and get in line to check out moving dolls, Christmas music, and festive lights.

The kids will be excited to write a letter to Santa. They can drop their stamped letter addressed to Santa in a specially-marked mailbox at Macy’s. The kids will get their Christmas wishes, and Macy’s will donate $1 for each letter received to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Santa in Helsinki

Finland

If you want to go one step further, after you mail the letter, hop on a flight to Lapland, Finland, the closest you can get to the North Pole without actually being there. The resorts in Lapland offer amenities for every type of family: bustling accommodations with shops and cafes or smaller hotels set in the natural beauty of the area. You can even stay in an igloo if you prefer. The Lapland Igloo Village offers traditional ice igloos as well as warmer glass igloos that give you a full view of the night sky.

While you’re there, you’ll probably meet Santa. You can take a sleigh ride pulled by reindeer, see the big book where Santa records who has been naughty or nice, or spot Santa’s elves. The Esprit resorts have dedicated themselves to all things Santa, and guests are looked after by Santa’s helpers as they enjoy the holiday fun.

Whether you’re trying to get back to the roots of the Christmas spirit or simply try something new, take the family on a Christmas adventure to a place where the focus is on the holiday. You’ll get away from the pressures that can spring up during the season and enjoy the magic without the stress.

Turkey is a melting pot of eastern and western culture. Needless to say it is culturally very rich. It is located on the Mediterranean and the famous river Bosporus passes through it. Turkey offers a wide variety of cultural and heritage sights. Besides a wide range of sights covering different ages and cultures, there are mountains of Lycia as well as the beaches of Pamphylia and many other natural wonders. While planning a holiday in Turkey one must keep in mind that there are many holidays in Turkey during which most businesses, banks and offices are not open for business and plan your trip accordingly to ensure a smooth tour.

There are many interesting stories surrounding Turkey which adds to its charm for instance it is believed that Noah’s Ark landed on Mount Ararat which is Turkey’s highest point. Mount Ararat is located amongst the easternmost mountain ranges of Turkey. Turkey was built on the remains of the Ottoman Empire and one can find traces of the once great empire in Turkey. The minarets and dome style Islamic architecture are still very much visible in Istanbul. Those interested in ancient and medieval architecture are in for a treat in Istanbul.

Those interested in viewing the remains of Medieval Armenia must pay a visit to Ani, located in the easternmost part of the country. Ani was once the capital of the great Armenian empire. Once one of the most powerful cities, today Ani looks like a ghost town. Ephesus, located on the western part of Turkey, is an archeological site for Roman ruins and a major tourist attraction. Aphrodisias is another Roman ruin located in the western part of Turkey close to Ani. One can go to Ephesus from Selcuk. The city of Urfa has many old buildings which have a middle-eastern look to it. The bazaar of Urfa is a good place to shop for souvenirs.

While planning a visit to Turkey one must keep as many days in hand to visit Istanbul as possible. Istanbul is the cultural centre of Turkey. Located on the sides of Bosphorus, the city is a bridge between Asia and Europe both literally as well as metaphorically. Since it was the capital of the great Ottoman Empire, one can find many monuments of the period like the blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and many more. Besides art and architecture of medieval age, Istanbul is a thriving centre of art and culture in modern times as well. While in Istanbul, one must experience a bath in Hamam or a Turkish bath, Nargile or a Turkish water pipe, Bosphorus cruise and the Theodosia wall walk. The best way to explore Turkey is on foot. While in Turkey one must try the delicious Turkish cuisine, it is varied and can fit any budget.

Dubai is fast becoming a major global city, a centre for tourism, commerce and culture. Its rise from small fishing village to glistening, mirrored city of skyscrapers, seven-star hotels and million-dollar supercars. Although Dubai is quickly growing in popularity, there is an invisible conflict going on in the city, not a political conflict, the like of which seen recently in less wealthy Arab countries, but a cultural struggle. The city is host to a struggle between tradition Eastern values and Western liberalism and consumerism.
This means that although Dubai is, on the surface, very much like any other large global city, it has its own unique set of rules and regulations that Westerners are not always aware of on their first visit. Here are five things to be aware of if you are taking luxury Dubai holidays

1. Shows of Public Affection
Public shows of affection are strictly prohibited in Dubai, this extends even to holding hands with a partner; certainly something to be aware of if you are planning on going to Dubai for a honeymoon. In 2008, a British couple were arrested for copulating on beach, a stern warning to lovebirds planning to canoodle in the Middle-East.

2. Drinking in the street
Drinking alcohol in public is also outlawed. Don’t let this put you off if you plan on having a couple of drinks with dinner, alcohol in hotel restaurants and bars is fine since they are considered ‘private’ establishments. If you are after a drinking holiday with a group of friends, Dubai may not be for you.

3. Displaying Bare Skin
Exposing any skin from the neck down is frowned upon in Middle-Eastern countries, however this rule applies more in some territories than others. In Dubai, the rules are relaxed slightly in an effort to be more tourist friendly. But this doesn’t mean you should walk the streets in a bikini, or a mankini for that matter!

4. Rude Gestures or Aggressive Behaviour
In Dubai, it has been known for people to be arrested for making an obscene gesture such as ‘two-fingered’ salute, or raising their voice in the street, especially at a policeman. Remain polite and courteous at all times, you never know who’ll take offence at what.

5. Possession of Drugs
Drug possession is serious crime in any country, but in Dubai, it can lead to imprisonment and even a death sentence. Bottom line – don’t carry drugs, no matter how well concealed you believe them to be.

With the summer of 2011 now fast approaching, travel analysts are reporting on some of the most popular holiday destinations for British travellers. As ever, Turkey is one of the most sought-after destinations and is set to welcome more UK tourists than ever this year.

A cheap holiday destination
One of the main reasons behind the popularity of Turkey holidays is that they are extremely affordable. With the Euro still higher than the Pound, travellers conscious of their budgets choose to travel to non-Eurozone countries such as Turkey. Flights to Turkey are also becoming increasingly cheaper according to a survey by Skyscanner, with flights to the coastal town of Dalaman ranking number 6 in the top 50 list of most popular cheap flights destinations. This makes it one of the best locations to travel to if you are looking to save money or are not sure if you could even afford a holiday.

Turkey, the perfect choice for beach holidays
Price aside, travellers booking Turkey holidays do so because of its alluring coastlines and idyllic beaches. The two main attractions are the Southern Aegean coast – where you will find plenty of sunshine, and the dramatic scenery of the Turquoise coast – home to the very popular resorts of Bodrum and Olu Deniz. With a reliable warm weather all year long – hot in summer and mild in winter, swimming season in Turkey can last longer than other European destinations, making it a great place to go for relaxing beach holidays. The more active travellers will not be disappointed, as they will be able to indulge in any of the many water-based activities available, such as sea-kayaking and diving. Whatever you are into, there are plenty of activities to choose from.

A fusion of two cultures
Turkey holidays offer the best of both worlds: the Turkish coast is only a 4 hour flight away from the UK and yet its unique culture, a fusion of European and Asian influences offers the exotic element some holidaymakers crave. Turkish cuisine in particular, is a flavourful mix of traditions from the Middle East, Mediterranean and West European regions. A typical Turkish summer meal would usually consists of fried vegetables (such as eggplant, potatoes, or zucchini) served with yoghurt, tomato sauce, sheep’s cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons, melons, or summer helva (lighter and less sweet than regular helva).

Turkish architecture is also a reflection of a unique clash of Iranian and Islamic cultures. Sumptuous mosques and buildings with intricate ornaments can be found all around Turkey’s charming cities and villages.

With so many attractions, it is no wonder that UK travellers keep going back to Turkey. For your next holiday on the Turkish coast, book an annual travel insurance package from Columbus Direct and relax. You can also visit http://www.columbusdirect.com for more details.

In spite being overshadowed by the glamor and dazzle of enormous Turkish city of Istanbul, Ankara is a close competitor of Istanbul when it comes to tourist attractions. It is the second biggest city of Turkey, though considerably smaller than Istanbul. Ankara is about as European as Turkey gets. There are plenty of touches of the mystical east but the vast majority of the city holds the style and elegance of Europe in every aspect. This capital city of Turkey is constantly expanding and offering a rather sophisticated and modern character. Many wide streets are now lined with coffee shops and eateries. It’s a huge university town and the streets of Kizilay or the bars of Sakarya are thronged with students for most of the year.

Best Time to Visit

Turkey is a popular tourist spot. The peak season is the national holiday time from July to mid-September. It’s best to visit before or after this period in order to avoid the rush and also the mosquitoes. But heavy or medium snowfall between November and May could hamper your tour schedule in the eastern regions.

Places to Visit

It is often said that Ankara is worth visiting. The old quarter around the citadel offers the discerning traveler an insight into a three thousand year-old cultural history which is still in some respects alive today.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

Situated below the citadel in Ankara, on its southwest side, this building was formerly used as a covered bazaar where clothes made from angora wool were traded. In 1951, this old building was converted into the world-famous Museum of Anatolian Civilizations which is also known as the Hittite Museum. The collection in this museum is divided into various departments. The museum has an enormous number of impressive and exceptional archeological finds from the Paleolithic period to classical times.

Mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk (Anitkabir)

The Mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk is one of the prime tourist spots in Ankara as well as in Turkey. The museum is named after Kemal Ataturk, the founder of Republic of Turkey. You can find a splendid blend of ancient and modern architecture in the construction of this museum building. The most popular attractions of the museum include a wax statue of Ataturk, his writings, personal items and other memoirs. The museum is also home to the modest little sarcophagus of Ataturk’s close friend and successor Ismet Inonu.

Lion’s Den Mosque

The Lion’s Den Mosque is a must-see Ankara landmark. The mosque is named after the lion statues in its walls. Lion’s Den Mosque is one of the best examples of Selçuk architecture in the whole city, featuring a polychrome ceramic mihrab and striking wooden support columns with marble Corinthian capitals atop.

Hisar

It’s worth spending a day wandering around Ulus, Samanpazari and the labyrinthine alleys of the city’s hilltop citadel. Once inside the citadel follow the road towards the centre until you pass through an archway. A view of the city from Eastern Tower will help you get the first real impression of how large Ankara has grown in the last 70 years. If you can be here for sunset, the call to prayer will make the experience much more memorable. The area is just starting to realize its potential as a tourist attraction and tidying up has begun.

Roman Baths

Situated on Cankiri Caddesi, a place just north of Ulus Meydani, the Roman Baths date back to the 3rd century AD and are well maintained. You can clearly see the heating system for the baths and the dressing room (apoditerium), the hot room (caldarium), the warm room (tepidarium) and the cold room (frigidarium). Beneath the baths are 7th century BC remains from the Phrygian period.

Temple of Augustus and Rome

Built in 10 AD by the Galatians, the Temple of Augustus and Rome retains the best-preserved copy of the Deeds of Deified Augustus that detail the Roman Empire. The Romans revamped the temple in the 2nd century although nearly 2,000 years of weather and seismic activity have taken their toll on this rather ancient attraction. Government plans to restore the temple are underway. The temple is closed to the public due to its state of disrepair.

Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo

Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo is a large recreational area that features farms, a zoo, a brewery and good restaurants. Enjoying a picnic here is a particularly pleasant experience, as is the hiking and cycling along miles of established paths. Culture lovers may want to take a look at the mock-up of Ataturk’s house, where he was born in 1881. Don’t miss to try ice cream and beer (home brew) while other attractions here include char-grilled kebabs at the traditional Turkish restaurant onsite.

Aquapark Club WaterCity

Aquapark Club WaterCity is ideal for families with its huge collection of water slides along with indoor and outdoor children’s pools. The park also comes with a good range of sports facilities and related attractions, and has a good restaurant and a café. The Aquapark is just outside Ankara in Golbasi, accessible by shared taxis and is perfect for cooling yourself down on hot days.

The Middle Eastern state of Israel lies in an area which is holy ground for the three great monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Â The country has never been a great power in world politics or economy, but it lies at a focal point of Middle Eastern history and is richly stocked with remains of a long and eventful past reaching far back into prehistory ; to the 8th millennium BC. The modern state of Israel offers individuals, families and youth travelers a wealth of places to visit and activities ranging from archeological, cultural, historical, religious, nature adventures and so much more. You can plan your travel your next holidays here in the land of Israel. Whether a tourist comes to Israel as a pilgrim, an art-lover or as one interested in history, the country offers a wide variety of tourist attractions to fascinate him.

Best Time to Visit

Israel is great to visit pretty much all year round. The timing of your visit, therefore, will depend on a number of crucial factors that you need to work out for yourself. Temperature in Israel is usually higher, often much higher, particularly in the South of the country, around the Dead Sea and Sea of Galilee areas. The spring (March, April and May) and the autumn (October and November) are the best two seasons to visit Israel.

Places to Visit

Nothing compares to the variety of Israel’s attractions. From the snowy heights of Mount Hermon, you can experience the Judean Desert and the saltiest sea on earth, the Dead Sea within a few hours. Visiting ancient biblical cities, covered markets and high-rise metropolis on the way are what make Israel truly a destination with something for everyone. The term “old” is of a very special significance in Israel. The age of most of cities here is counted not in decades or in centuries but in millennia. The brilliance and authenticity of some of the historical gems in Israel have won a place on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is an incomparable highlight of Israel that has both historical and spiritual significance. The city has various interesting buildings, monuments and shopping places in store for the tourists to discover and enjoy. You can start from the Al – Aqsa Mosque, built from 710 to 715; this is the world’s holiest Muslim site after Mecca and Medina. Other places include Ammunition Hill Memorial where one of the fiercest battles in Jerusalem was fought. Basilica of the Agony of the Lord regarded as the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed before his arrest. British Military Cemetery holds the graves of British soldiers who died in World War I, Damascus gate, on the other hand, is the main entrance to the twisting and turning corridors of the Muslim Quarter.

Haifa

The beautiful sea port of Haifa is believed to be one of the best places for a holiday trip in the Middle East. Haifa not just possesses natural beauty; its wonderful outset, rich cultural and historical background along with architectural magnificence helped Haifa to emerge as a tourist-magnet. Your trip to Haifa can’t exclude Sightseeing in Haifa as the place is endowed with a bundle of worth watching places. Bahai Shrine and Persian Garden, Elijah’s Cave, Haifa Museum, Bahai Cable Car, Chaqall House, Carmelite Monastery and Ben-Gurion Street are only some of the tourist attractions in Haifa.

Bethlehem

Bethlehem is a major tourist destination of the world which has been attracting tourists from all across the globe. The town of Bethlehem is considered to the birthplace for King David and Jesus of Nazareth. It has 27,000 inhabitants half of whom are Moslems and half are Christians. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is considered to be amongst the most important Christian Holy Places throughout the Christian World.

Tel Aviv

There’s no place like Tel Aviv to indulge your urban tastes. Classified by geographers as a “world city,” the city offers opera, museums, theater, dance, finest restaurants with cuisines from around the world. The Azrieli Observatory in Tel Aviv is a wonderful experience that must not be missed. Situated on the 49th floor of the highest building in Israel, it provides the opportunity to look at Tel Aviv from the highest possible perspective. If you want to sworn by the beauty of the sunsets, Gordon Beach is the ideal sightseeing point in Tel Aviv. Old Jaffa, with all its ancient charms, is a wonderful counterpoint to the busting city of Tel Aviv. Besides, there are plenty of other notable tourist attractions in Tel Aviv like Eretz Israel Museum, Bet Bialik Museum, Hagana Museum, Luna Park, Gan Meir Park etc.

Iran, located in the Middle East, has some of the finest and globally acclaimed tourist attractions. These historical and architectural marvels are the fruits of the assorted cultures and civilizations that have grown and evolved within Iran along with time. These sites, therefore, are of great historical importance and ancient significance that are beyond any comparison. The antique sights of Persia, one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, can be witnessed alongside the bustling metropolises and vast mountain ranges. Tehran, the capital, is a busy and modern city; but the best places of historic significance have been preserved. Iran is gradually growing as a popular tourist destination; so it’s possible to visit Iran’s finest tourist attractions without being swamped by other eager tourists.

Best Time to Visit

Iran is a vast country with regions of different temperatures. Thanks to its diverse geography, you can enjoy the fun of experiencing all kinds of climates in one season. Spring and autumn are quite short seasons in Iran. But generally those are the best seasons to visit this country.

Best 5 Place to Visit

Iran is an ancient country. Due to its historical background and sustainable social and cultural development, Iran has a lot of diverse worth seeing sites that satisfy tourists with different tastes. Every tourist, regardless to their incentive, can find plenty of spectacular places suitable to their taste. Many of these sites have been registered in the UNESCO List of world human heritage.

The following are five of the most popular Iranian attractions.

1. Takht-e Soleyman

Takht-e Soleyman or the “Throne of Solomon”, situated in a valley set in a volcanic mountain region, is a popular archaeological site of north-western Iran. The site lies in the middle of Hamadan and Urumieh; it is close to the present-day town of Takab and about 400 km west of Tehran. The place includes a principal Zoroastrian sanctuary partly rebuilt in the Mongol period and a temple of the Sasanian period which is dedicated to Anahita. The site has great symbolic significance. The designs of the fire temple, the palace and the general layout have played a strong influential role in the development of Islamic architecture.

2. Pasargadae

Pasargadae, founded by Cyrus II the Great in Pars, was the first dynastic capital of the Achaemenid Empire. In the 6th century BC, Pars was the homeland of the Persians. The gardens, palaces and the mausoleum of Cyrus are the finest examples of the first phase of royal Achaemenid architecture, art and exceptional testimonies of Persian civilization. Pasargadae spans from the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt to the Hindus River and is considered to be the first empire to respect the cultural diversity of its different peoples. The same is reflected in Achaemenid architecture where you can find a synthetic representation of various cultures. Particularly noteworthy vestiges here include the Mausoleum of Cyrus II; Tall-e Takht, a fortified terrace; and a royal ensemble of gatehouse, audience hall, residential palace and gardens.

3. Bisotun

On the rocks of Bisotun Mountain, there are some of the most important historical evidences that date back to the Achaemenid period. The principal monument here in this archaeological site is the bas-relief and cuneiform inscription ordered by Darius the Great as he rose to the throne of the Persian Empire in 521 BC. This is the only known monumental text of the Achaemenids that document the re-establishment of the Empire by Darius I and the significance of its cuneiform script is the same as what the Rosetta Stone is to Egyptologists.

4. Bam

Bam is a small town in the middle of the desert on the southern part of the Iranian high plateau and its origin dates back to the Achaemenid period. The enormous citadel in this city, Arg-e-Bam, was built around 500 BC and it was considered to be the biggest and most beautiful mud-brick complex in the world. Bam is surrounded by gigantic walls and that has two mosques, military barracks, a public bath, a caravanserai, a market, water wells, a jail, a stable, about 400 houses and more. The 2003 earthquake destroyed more than 80 percent of this architectural marvel. But the reconstruction of the Bam Citadel is underway.

5. Persepolis

Founded by Darius I in 518 B.C., Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. The surviving ruins of Persepolis today are nothing but a mere shadow of Persepolis’ former glory. Persepolis was built on an immense half-natural, half-artificial terrace where the emperor created a gigantic palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian models. In its heyday the city spread over an area of about 125000 sq meters and was the place where all the people of the empire came over “Nau Ruz” or the New Year to pay homage to the kings. The complex holds in Ceremonial palaces, Halls, small dedicated palaces, royal treasury and tombs. Today this monument consists of the remains of several monumental buildings such as Gate of All Nations, Palace of 100 Columns, Palace of Darius, Xerxes’ Palace, Central Palace, and Apadana Palace. Persepolis was burned to the ground by Alexander in 330 BC.

Turkey is a country with a history that traces back to the beginnings of civilization as well as friendly hospitality that greets visitors today. Straddling the line that divides Europe from Asia, it is a country where people go to study ancient societies, wander through old castles, gaze upon the stunning natural scenery, discover modern culture in the city centers and relax on the warm Mediterranean coast.

History buffs will fall in love with the multitude of ancient sites scattered around the country. It has more Greek ruins than Greece and more Roman archaeological sites than Italy, and because it served as a crossroads for Christians, Jews and Muslims, it has sacred sites for all walks of religious life, as well as a thorough collection of artifacts from the Greek, Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

On the Gallipoli Peninsula, travelers can consider the action that once took place on the Anzac battlefields, while a visit to Ephesus houses the remains of a Roman city that includes a 25,000-seat theatre. Anî, the former Armenian capital, also has a number of ruins from days gone by, and ruins from another great Roman city can be seen from Hîerapolîs.

Those hoping to spice up a holiday with outdoor adventure would be wise to seek out Nemrut Daği National Park, one of the most popular attractions in Eastern Turkey. At 2,150 meters high, Nemrut Daği’s peak is not just another mountaintop. Rather, the summit was created by a pre-Roman local king and is the site of countless statues.

Nestled deep in the heart of Turkey is Cappadocia, an area with an eerie landscape where former inhabitants lived in houses built into the cliffs and built their cities underground. Today tourists can stay in cave hotels and embark on exciting activities such as riding a hot air balloon over the landscape. The nature of the landscape results in a kaleidoscope of colors as the sun bounces off the cliff face. For even more adventure (and a stunning view of the natural beauty prevalent in Turkey), head to Ölüdeniz, where adrenaline junkies seek out Babadag for a heart-stopping but exhilarating paragliding experience.

City life is one of the highlights of any visit to Turkey. Istanbul in particular has drawn tourists from around the world in recent years that flock to its restaurants, bars, clubs and galleries. Istanbul also still shows many signs of its old ways of life, and a visit to Sultanahmet (the cultural center of the city) offers easy access to Aya Sofya, the former Byzantine church as well as the Blue Mosque, a massive structure with more minarets than any other mosque in Istanbul, tens of thousands of blue tiles and 260 windows.

Despite the growing metropolitan scene, traditional Turkish traditions can still be found in the bazaars, which are tucked into the folds of the city. Istanbul’s spice bazaar is known for its abundance of spices, nuts, honey, figs, fruit and soaps and is worth a visit for the smells alone.

People know Jordan for the ancient city of Petra, but for a country nearly landlocked and surrounded by centuries of religious, archaeological and cultural history, it truly is so much more. Due to its geographical position, Jordan has seen decades of wars and crises take place in neighboring countries, but it has also served as a home to refugees. Because it doesn’t contain the rich oil reserves that other Middle Eastern countries have, the country struggles economically, but it still remains a viable tourist destination.

Jordan is a great getaway for those who relish outdoor adventure. Take a desert tour with a guide and a 4-wheel drive vehicle for a true sense of the vast desert—and the incredible castles that you’ll see in what seems to be the middle of nowhere. Check out the country from above in a hot air balloon or enjoy Jordan by train on the Hejaz Railway from Amman to Damascus. Float in the Dead Sea or dive in the Red Sea, but on land take the time to go hiking in the Dana Nature Reserve, home of the elusive ibex. Jordan is actually home to a handful of wildlife reserves (Azraq Wetlands is particularly popular) where visitors can spot a variety of animals, including hyena, gazelle, wolves, ostriches and oryx.

Take time to visit Azraq, a fortress used by Lawrence of Arabia during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917. The castles of Karak and Ash Shawbak and the stunning mosaic floors at St. Stephen in Um er Rasas (an UNESCO World Heritage site) are definitely worth checking out. For a more thorough understanding of the country’s history, stop by The Citadel and Archaeological Museums in Amman (Jordan’s capital city), which has a selection of the Dead Seas Scrolls and remnants of ancient cities. The Dead Sea Panorama museum helps to put the lowest point on earth in perspective.

You should also bask in the beauty of Wadi Rum, a series of desert valleys made up of sand and rocks that have eroded over time. The area boasts ever-changing extraordinary desert scenery that has to be experienced to be believed. A handful of villages are set throughout Wadi Rum and are an ideal location to learn more about the Bedouin culture.

All of that said, no visit to Jordan is complete without visiting Petra, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is a huge city of temples and tombs carved out of rose-colored rock by the Nabataeans, which is most stunning at dusk when the setting sun turns the city a rosy pink color.

It is best to visit Jordan in either March to May or September to November, when daytime temperatures are bearable and not too extreme. Winter months can be quite chilly and snow is no stranger to Jordan. During the heat of the summer, humidity and extreme temperatures can be oppressive. Many who have traveled to the country would recommend you visit in April or May when an overabundance of spring flowers begin to bloom.

Nestled in the Middle East between Israel and Jordan, the West Bank is a Palestinian Territory with a history mired in political strife and religious turbulence. It is controlled by both Palestinian and Israeli authorities, and both areas claim the region belongs to them. Officially, the West Bank isn’t a part of any country, and though it is currently under the Israeli administration, its future remains murky.

The West Bank is steeped in ancient biblical history with countless sites that sum up the area’s religious and archaeological significance. Nabulus, the site of Jacob’s well, is on the West Bank. Bethlehem and Jericho are both located here as well. It’s little wonder, then, that there would be a strong draw to travel to the West Bank. But should you?

Most governments around the world have posted warnings advising travelers to avoid the West Bank because of the tumultuous political situation and ongoing violence. Inter-factional tension, demonstrations and military operations targeting militants in cities and villages throughout the West Bank are common. Travel in the area requires driving through several Israeli military checkpoints, and violent outbreaks frequently happen in these areas.

Nonetheless, the West Bank beckons. There is certainly a sense of safety and security to consider when debating whether to make the trip to the West Bank. Those who have been there guarantee you’ll never watch the nightly news coming out of the Middle East in quite the same way again. That said, no one can make the decision for you about whether you should travel to the West Bank or not, but should you decide to venture into this area that truly is well off the beaten path, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Though there are certainly safety issues to consider, the West Bank is not off limits for travelers. In fact, some would argue that due to the rigid security measures, the area is surprisingly safe for travelers.

Stay up-to-date on the travel advisories as posted by your country of residence. Government websites are routinely updated with advisories to reflect the latest security concerns. Make sure you understand what you’re getting into before arriving in the West Bank.

Keep your paperwork with you. You will need to show your passport, verify your citizenship and complete a security check when arriving, and you may be asked to do the same at other checkpoints once in the area.

A perceived Jewish person traveling by Palestinian transportation and an Arab person on Jewish transportation in the West Bank may attract suspicion. Dress and behave like a foreigner and you may be in the safest neutral position.

Violence tends to be localized, so watch the news and check the situation before you travel within the West Bank.

Travel during the day and avoid traveling at night if at all possible. Travel with another person if you are able.

Register with the closest embassy, and let people know about your travel plans.

Saudi Arabia is shrouded in mystery. In popular news, we hear about the political strife and struggles over Saudi Arabia’s supply of oil. Not only do many nations advise against travel to this Middle Eastern country, but Saudi Arabia has also been hesitant to let visitors inside its borders until recently. Those who do venture into this relatively unknown nation, however, are greatly rewarded with rich culture, beautiful landscapes and ancient sites.

The country is home to gorgeous mountains, beaches and rivers. In the neighboring Red Sea are some of the least visited and most spectacular reefs in the world, ideal for snorkeling. Swimming, waterskiing, fishing and sailing are also popular in Obhir Creek, north of Jeddah, and on the Gulf coast south of Al Khobar. Saudi Arabia is also home to an incredible array of wildlife in the Asir, a range of coastal mountains. Throughout the country, travelers can also spot baboon, gazelle, leopard and the Arabian oryx.

Though these natural wonders are stunning, it is the Empty Quarter that is perhaps more dramatic than any of those. It is the largest sea of sand on the planet, which covers an area equivalent to the size of Texas or France. The sand dunes can be as large as ships and are constantly changing with the winds. They stretch for hundreds of miles in large ridges.

Travelers looking for historical site seeing will find no shortage of interesting places to explore in Saudi Arabia. The Madain Saleh is by far one of the most impressive sites in the entire country. The Nabataeans, who carved Petra in Jordan, also created Madain Saleh. It served as an intersection for traders, pilgrims and explorers as they made their way across the Middle East. On site there are intricately stone-carved temples and spectacular tombs.

In addition to Madain Saleh, visitors should also explore the ancient city of Jeddah, which is known for its restaurants and markets. Check out the gasaba towers, the ancient city of Qaryat-al-Fau, and the great dam and temple in Najran, which served as an ancient caravan stop. In Abqaiq, you can see a 5,000-year-old salt mine in operation, while a visit to an old settlement on Tarut Island affords visitors the chance to watch fisherman and weavers at work.

No visit to Saudi Arabia is complete without shopping. The country is home to countless traditional souks and several large department stores and malls, which are worth a stop while you’re traveling. Special deals may be found tucked in the market stalls. Because nightlife, theatres and bars are all but nonexistent in Saudi Arabia, shopping is a popular pastime. Jeddah, which is located on the coast, has several souks while Hofuf is the site of an active camel market. Hofuf is also known for its fabulous cuisine.

Finally, make sure you stop to visit the royal capital of Riyadh, a modern metropolis perched atop a town captured by Ibn Saud in 1902. Remnants of the old town can be seen at Masmak Fort and near Deera Square, where a handful of traditional Najdi palaces still stand.

In this jet-set era, flying is considered to be the most time-saving mode of transport and according to many also the most comfortable. Although traveling by air can save a lot of physical energy yet the mental harassment that one has to encounter here with emigration, customs and immigration cannot be made up for. However, all your inconvenience becomes negligible if you have had a good flying experience and only then will your wait at the terminal be substituted for. With the aviation industries becoming more and more competitive, low-cost carriers are increasingly stepping into the market but even today regular fliers swear by the goodwill of the older players. An insightful look into some of the top names makes it clear why their quality and high standard has still made them greatly desirable to passengers.

Singapore Airlines

The first name that comes to mind when discussing the most popular airplane services globally is Singapore Airlines. The airline has consistently won awards for maintaining high quality of services both in the business and economy classes. Today, it has unanimously become the choice for those who want to book long-haul flights because they sincerely try to mix business and pleasure aboard their flights. Following closely upon the trail of Singapore Airlines is Thai Airways, another proud name from Asia. First class cannot get grander than in Thai Airways, specifically the lounge at Bangkok airport which deserves special mention. It has also won worldwide recognition for having well dressed cabin crew on board. The prestigious Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong that has been serving passengers for a longer time has been consistent in maintaining its standards in all sectors are it first class, economy class or the terminal lounge. The flight attendants are friendly and the food unmatched.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is a comparatively new airline in the aviation sector but it has quite immediately started grabbing attention. It provides superb in-flight attendance to both economy and first-class passengers. The Australian carrier Qantas is synonymous with security and safety and none has yet superseded the carrier in this sector. Their budget carrier too has been providing quality services to passengers. Malaysia Airlines together with Air New Zealand too are slowly making their presence felt in the aviation industry and their excellent cabin crew is only acting as a complimentary service.

China Airlines

Like its growing economy China is also making a mark in the aviation sector with China Airlines. Unlike other top-notch airlines, it is not a private player and is owned by the state. Through its services it is slowly earning good repute for its country. The Emirates is the most recognized airline in the Middle-east and its services is nothing less than of royal standard. If you really want to experience luxury and bliss then Emirates is the airline for you. The airline has never lost its place in the hearts of those who want to make flying a luxury holiday experience. With newer carriers entering the market, the age-old charm of British Airways has dwindled a bit but passengers still show full loyalty towards it for its quality services.

Baggage restrictions are making it more difficult for families with small children to take a holiday abroad, according to a survey by The Co-operative Travel.

A total of 39% of respondents to the online survey said airlines’ baggage restrictions make it hard to take childcare essentials with them on holiday.

Parents also said difficulties getting on board the flight, moving around the airport, and a lack of facilities at hotels, made it hard for them to travel with children.

As a result, 44% of parents wait until their child is over five years old before taking them on a foreign holiday. It was also revealed that 82% of families choose short-haul holidays to avoid complications.

The Co-operative Travel director of retail distribution Trevor Davis said: “This survey reveals that many parents simply aren’t getting the help they need to make the most of their holiday.”

The study was conducted from July 22-28 and is based on 748 responses.

While luxury hotels slash rates to stay out of the red,the financial downturn has made three- and four-star properties a natural choice for consumers, according to Holiday Inn Dubai general manager Reda Moukhtar.

“Surrounding five-star properties are offering three-star rates, but  we’re still able to compete because mid-market hotels are in fashion,” said Moukhtar.

“No-one is looking for five-star hotels, businesses in particular want to be seen as saving money during the downturn,” he added.

Moukhtar’s comments were echoed by Premier Inn managing director Darroch Crawford, who said limited-service hotels were “very much the flavour of the month” in the Middle East.

“People are looking to save costs and the mid-market hotels offer everything needed for a good night’s sleep. In the luxury hotels, you have five-to-six staff members saying ‘good morning’ to you, but you’re paying for that,” asserted Crawford.

“As clients become more educated on value for money, they’re becoming more loyal to limited-service brands and are realising it is not a compromise on quality; it’s taking responsibility and cost saving,” he added.

In response to luxury hotels drastically dropping rates, Premier Inn properties in the region slashed rates by up to 30%, but in spite of the challenging summer Crawford said the hotels had “seen more business this year than last” and was “encouraged for the winter”.

Furthermore, InterContinental Hotel Group’s (IHG) interim results for the first half of 2009 to June 30 (H1) support Moukhtar’s observations, with the company’s mid-market hotel brand, Holiday Inn, showing more resilience than luxury brand InterContinental worldwide, for example.

The InterContinental brand showed a 9.4% fall in occupancy (to 60.8%) during H1 when compared to the same period in 2008, while Holiday Inn fell only 7.5% (to 54.6%).

Similarly, average daily rate (ADR) for InterContinental fell 8.4% (to US $158.10), compared to a 5.2% drop (to $93.04) across the Holiday Inn properties, and InterContinental’s revPAR fell 20.7% (to $96.13), while revPAR for Holiday Inn hotels only dropped 16.6% (to $50.79)

However, while Holiday Inn was more resilient, overall results showed the company’s luxury brand InterContinental continued to perform better in terms of higher occupancy, ADR and revPAR.

According to credit card and electronic payment specialist Visa, American card holders spent AED 3 billion in the United Arab Emirates last year, while UAE residents added AED 961 million to the US economy during their travels.

“Travel and tourism are key revenue streams for Visa and it is important for us to understand the travel habits of our card holders,” said Visa Inc, Middle East and North Africa GM Kamran Seddiqi.

“In turn, this allows us to continue to offer value added travel rewards to our card holders and enhance the experience, convenience and security of traveling with a Visa card.”

The AED 2.7 billion that US holidaymakers contributed to UAE tourism revenues in 2008 was up 85% on 2007 spending, with the average price of a purchase for Americans in the UAE around US $140.

In turn, Emiratis charged $262 million to their Visa cards while visiting the US in 2008, up 49%.

“Despite a challenging economic environment, international tourism remains resilient,” concluded Tourism Outlook: USA – a report from Visa Inc.

Aldar Hospitality is working in conjunction with a number of hotel companies across the region to help find jobs for hospitality staff that have been made redundant as a result of the current economic climate, according to managing director Paul Bell.

Having also initiated overseas recruitment drives in the wider GCC, the Far East and North Africa, Bell acknowledged market conditions outside Abu Dhabi had been more challenging.

“It is inevitable staff will look to new hotel openings in a market that is navigating this difficult period with greater ease for stability and job security as well as career development opportunities,” he explained.

Following a reported influx of hoteliers from Dubai to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, Bell insisted employee packages offered at The Yas Hotel were in line with the market.

“The Yas Island hotels are managed by a number of operators and brands with their own salary and benefits scales — the decisions on individual positions and remuneration are taken by the operator in the best interests of the particular hotel.

“The operators have also had the opportunity to transfer staff to the new Yas Island properties from existing hotels in the region, which has helped them retain talented staff which might otherwise have not been possible. At The Yas Hotel, our packages are not significantly above the market average,” he added.
