The Anchorage Fur Rendezvous festival has a mixed history that includes both need and tradition. Having attained its name from swap meets where fur traders met to sell their winter harvest, the festival later attained a degree of entertainment when a law was levied that miners and trappers would have to keep beards for the festival or pay a fine. This, however, was part of the fun as the people in the city followed it without any problem.

The story of the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous dates back to 1935, when the festival was launched. In that year, the city of Anchorage was sparsely populated with just 3000 people. Therefore, to unite everybody a resident organized a three-day sports festival, called the Winter Sports Carnival, which coincided with the Rendezvous festival. This not only kept the people of his small city united, but also brought increased activity in the region and drew the attention of the tourists from across the world. Furthermore, Fur Trade, which was the second-largest industry and one of the chief sources of income in the region, got a boost with the festival and the Winter Sports Carnival was renamed the Winter Sports Tournament and Fur Rendezvous in 1937 (emphasizing the importance of the occupation in the lives of the people of Alaska).

Though declared defunct during the war years, the festival was resumed with even more pomp and show in 1946; more so, because the festival had started grabbing the attention of travellers from across the globe. In the year 1955, the organization authority was taken over by the non-profit organization Greater Anchorage Inc. Though held for ten days at a stretch, since 2004, the festival continues till early March till the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
