Soldeu, Andorra

Hailed as one of Europe’s best beginner resorts, Soldeu has two extensive nursery areas and plenty of terrain for beginners in the rolling slopes both above and below the tree line. Historic District

The best way to see Savannah is a hop on, hop off trolley bus or a quiet carriage ride. Trolleys and carriage tours offer background as you sight-see. Samoa

Broadway

If you’re looking for culture, music, dance, and entertainment, stop off at Broadway Avenue; it runs the full length of Manhattan and continues into Westchester County. With its diverse performing arts offerings ranging from comedy to musical theater, the Theater District on Broadway has grand-scale productions and small, intimate performances. The lower section of Broadway crosses into the Financial District. Dotted along “the avenue” are the notable Union Square, Madison Square, and Herald Square.

SoHo

With an even more artsy flair, SoHo is home to trendy boutiques, funky art galleries, and studio space. Its name is an abbreviated form of the phrase “South of Houston Street,” and the neighborhood is bordered by Greenwich Village, Little Italy, and TriBeCa. Besides the beautiful cast-iron architecture, artists’ lofts characterize this happening section of New York. It’s also known for fashion, and now offers some posh shopping spots such as Prada, Bloomingdale’s, Miu Miu, and Dolce & Gabbana.

Central Park

When you visit Central Park, you’ll be amazed that it’s right in the center of bustling New York City. It’s one of the most popular places to play baseball in the city, and it also offers guided tours, a carousel, a zoo, and boating excursions. Catch-and-release fishing is allowed in the Harlem Meer, an aquatic ecosystem in which largemouth bass and sunfish thrive. At the zoo, you can meet a red panda, a snow leopard, a snow monkey, and other mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds.

Ground Zero

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center is scheduled to open to the public on September 11, 2011. Sitting in the footprint of the Twin Towers are two reflecting pools edged in bronze panels inscribed with the names of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks of 1993 and 2001. The museum will pay tribute to the impact of these historic events, showcasing photographs, audio and videotapes, recorded testimonies, and other memorabilia relating to the events of 1993 and 2001.

South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is a cobble-stoned neighborhood with a rich and diverse history. It seems to always be alive with festivals, music, and community. At the Fulton Stall Market, artisans, crafters, and food vendors sell unique gifts, fresh food, and other items in what used to be the fish stalls. It’s a small business feel with neighborhood appeal. The shops and restaurants in South Street Seaport offer a unique spin on New York Shopping, and it can all be experienced on the water.

Coney Island

When you’ve finished shopping and touring, and you just want to enjoy yourself or grab a hot dog, check out Coney Island. This New York City neighborhood isn’t an amusement park, but it has about 50 different rides and attractions. The neighborhood features a beach, a boardwalk, and the New York Aquarium. Although the rides are not open year-round, the beach and boardwalk are, and a stop at this historic area is worth a visit.

New York City is an energetic metropolis made up of smaller neighborhoods, each with its own flair. Of course, you can find art, culture, dining, and shopping at every turn. The more you investigate the city, the more one turn leads to another, and you end up discovering even more than you imagined. New York is a big city with a big personality, and it begs to be explored.

U-Drop-Inn and Tower Station

Opened in 1936, the U-Drop-Inn was inspired by the image of a nail stuck in the dirt. Sure enough, the tall towers have what almost look like nail heads driven into them. The art deco architecture and neon lights have a vintage flair. Now home to the city’s chamber of commerce, the building also houses a museum and gift shop. Its “cartoon-ish” nature served it well; the U-Drop-Inn was also the inspiration for one of the buildings in the movie “Cars.”

Muffler Men

These giant fiberglass statues made by International Fiberglass stand alongside many U.S. highways. The muffler man in Wilmington, Illinois, is known as the Gemini Giant. He stands in front of the Launching Pad Drive-In. The old diner is no longer in operation, but the Giant still stands there, holding a rocket and wearing a welding helmet on his head.

Henry’s Rabbit Ranch

Stop in Staunton, Illinois, to see all kinds of rabbits. Around the vintage replica of a gas station, visitors will see rabbits—the animals with two long ears and a fluffy tail and the Volkswagen Rabbit—as well as Route 66 mementos. Historic cars, trucking memorabilia, and vintage signs are fun to look at and interesting to learn about.

Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park

This park in Rogers County, Oklahoma, is a unique sight. Galloway worked on the first totem pole for 11 years. It is built from steel, cement, sand, and rock, and is 30 feet wide and 90 feet tall. Several other ornate totem poles stand tall on the property, and an eleven-sided Fiddle House is surrounded by totem poles.

Giant Pop Bottle

A 66-foot tall soda bottle in Arcadia, Oklahoma lights up the night with its LED rings. The dazzling light show is nothing compared to the array of soda pop found in Pop’s restaurant. If you’re not into soda, you could try a shake, malt, or float or satisfy your hunger with a Black Angus burger with all the fixings. Even though the record-breaking selection of soda pop takes you back to an earlier era, the contemporary architecture with its steel canopy makes you feel like you’re in a restaurant of tomorrow.

Wigwam Motel

If you always wanted to sleep in a wigwam, you still can in Holbrook, Arizona. Fifteen 32-foot-tall wigwams line the property, and each hold a bed or two and a television. In the gift shop, visitors can buy a handmade replica of one of the wigwams, a wigwam lamp, T-shirts, and postcards.

Loretto’s Chapel Miraculous Staircase

Inside Loretto’s Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an architectural mystery. The wooden staircase that provides access to the choir loft is a circular staircase with no central support. No one knows who built the staircase, how it stands (it was supposedly built without the use of nails) or from what kind of wood it was built. The story behind the staircase is mysterious; it is said that a stranger appeared at the chapel to build the staircase after the nuns prayed for a way to reach the previously inaccessible choir loft.

With its quirky roadside attractions, unique hotels, and mysterious staircase, the original Route 66 is an icon of American history. Americana buffs will not let the spirit of the old road die, and travelers will always find something remarkable to add to their scrapbooks.

South of the Border—Dillon, SC

Billboards advertising this truck stop begin about 100 miles away. With humorous, tongue-in-cheek sayings like, “You never sausage a place!” and “You’re always a wiener at Pedros!” you may wonder what lies ahead. When you see the giant sombrero towering over the highway, you know you’ve arrived.

A cross between an amusement park, arcade, and a beach boardwalk, South of the Border is open every hour of every day, all year long. It features an indoor miniature golf course, five restaurants, a 300-room motel, three gas stations, and a campground. It’s probably a little more fun than any truck stop should be.

Rip Griffin Travel Center—New Braunfels, TX

Indulge in the best barbecue in Texas … at a truck stop? That’s right—this truck stop has an antique tractor that has been converted into a meat smoker to fill the bellies of hungry travelers. It’s all about service; truckers are chauffeured from the parking lot in a limousine that’s been decked out to look like a bull.

Iowa 80—Wolcott, IA

Purportedly the largest truck stop in the world, Iowa 80 sees more than 5,000 trucks a day. The amenities are perfectly sized for the amount of traffic it attracts. The restaurant seats 350 hungry travelers, and the salad bar is 50 feet long.

The stop also houses a trucking museum, a souvenir shop with its own mail-order catalog, and a truck-washing station. If you’re a trucker, this is the place to be. Iowa 80 has been holding an annual Trucker’s Jamboree since 1979, with exhibits, a cookout, a carnival, Trucker Olympics, and fireworks.

Jubitz Truck Stop—Portland, OR

For travelers who need more than just an hour’s rest, the Jubitz Truck Stop offers a hotel with Jacuzzi suites, a delicious restaurant, a live band at the Ponderosa Lounge, and a cinema. It also features a 24-hour arcade, shops, and a banquet room. If you stop here, you may just want to hang out for a few days.

Lodi Travel Center—Seville, OH

This was one of the first truck stops to serve Starbucks coffee! Funny—now it seems that they all do. So consider this an historic place to stop. Travel Centers of America uses this location as a training center, so it has to be good. Travelers can reconnect after a long day on the road at the Internet café while sipping a venti latte and chatting with their family.

Whiskey Pete’s—Primm, NV

Whiskey Pete’s is more of a resort than a truck stop, but it does offer a 24-hour restaurant for truckers and other travelers. Known as the “Castle in the Desert,” Whiskey Pete’s has a 777-room hotel, monorail, live entertainment, pool, and casino.

Truck stops give travelers a place to rest and work up some more energy for the long road home, but they can also be destinations in and of themselves. They are usually budget-friendly and may offer more amenities than a typical resort. Best of all, they are located on major highways and are easy to access. Stop at a famous truck stop on your next vacation, or—better yet—make it your next vacation.

Evander Holyfield

Born in Alabama and raised in Atlanta, Holyfield started boxing when he was twelve years old.  He quickly showed promise by winning boxing tournaments and qualifying for the Junior Olympics. By the age of twenty, Holyfield had earned an amateur record of 160-14 and had a silver medal from the Pan Am Games.

Two of the most famous fights in Las Vegas history were held between Holyfield and Mike Tyson. The first match was held in 1996 at the MGM Grand for the heavyweight title. Holyfield upset Tyson by knocking him down in the sixth round. The second match was held a year later, and became known as the “bite fight” when Tyson was disqualified for biting off a piece of Holyfield’s ear.

Mike Tyson

As mentioned earlier, Tyson will live in infamy as the instigator of the “bite fight” incident at the MGM Grand. Although he’s dealt with personal issues both in and outside of the ring, Tyson had some of his biggest fights and accomplishments in Las Vegas. Earlier in his career, Tyson won and retained the WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles in matches held in Las Vegas.

Without all of the great boxers who have fought there over the years, Las Vegas wouldn’t be the boxing capital of the world. When you combine those great fighters with the excitement of a city like Las Vegas, boxing fans get an experience that can’t be seen anywhere else.

Oscar de la Hoya

“The Golden Boy” had to endure trauma in his early life while moving up through the ranks as a boxer. His mother contracted breast cancer when he was seventeen, and her last wish before passing away was that she hoped that Oscar would win an Olympic gold medal; he granted her wish by winning a gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Oscar has been a part of some of the biggest Las Vegas fights over the past ten years. He has also generated more money from his fights than any other boxer in history. From his defeat of Arturo Gatti to his classic bout with Mayweather, Jr., de la Hoya will go down in the history books as one of the greatest fighters to step foot in Las Vegas.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

You could almost say that boxing is in Mayweather’s blood. His father and two of his uncles all attained boxing titles. Floyd was trained by his father, from an early age, and won multiple Golden Gloves championships.  Mayweather has become integral with Las Vegas over the years, having also lived and trained in the city. Over the past five or six years, he’s fought in some of the biggest matches held in Las Vegas. He is still undefeated and has beaten fighters such as Zab Judah, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Shane Mosley.

Muhammad Ali

Considered by many to be the greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali began fighting in his home state of Kentucky when he was just a child. The story goes that Ali (Cassius Clay) was pushed by a police officer into boxing after his bike was stolen. He went on to win Golden Gloves titles and eventually the gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Ali had various fights over the years in Las Vegas, including a bout with Ron Lyle, which Ali won to retain his title. One of Ali’s last matches, held in Las Vegas, was with Larry Holmes. Ali lost this match and Holmes won the WBC heavyweight title.

The historic Hill Country Flyer departs every weekend from the quaint town of Cedar Park. Passengers are treated to a two-hour trek through the scenic Texas Hill Country, and the train makes a stopover in Burnet. There, you and your family can enjoy a picnic lunch, do some shopping at the train depot, and see a re-creation of a Wild West gun slinging shootout. Perdenales State Park

Tubing, picnicking, and just hanging out here is popular with locals and travelers alike.

Longhorns Cavern State Park

Nature spent a million years perfecting this underground wonder in the Texas Hill Country, and is filled with mazes of passages and caves. According to Texas history, there were speakeasy parties held here during the time of Prohibition. You can walk, crawl, and climb through the passageways in the cavern on the extreme caving adventure, or opt for a tamer general tour.

The Vanishing Texas River Cruise

This is a great way for you and your family to relax during the Highland Lakes trip, and the riverboat launches from the town of Burnet onto Lake Buchanan. 1. Travel in the Off-Season

It may not always be

popular because of work or school, but if you can travel at a time of year that isn’t that popular for traveling, you will save a lot of money. The good news it that Florida is lovely all year long, so any time that you go will be nice. You’ll save on hotels, transportation and airplane tickets, and even food or tickets to various attractions. Compare credit cards online to see if there are any possible credit card rewards. The most popular time to visit is the summer months in June, July, and August, so that is when you’ll most likely want to avoid Florida. It’s also extremely hot in Florida during these months, which can make an uncomfortable vacation. You’ll also want to avoid major holidays, such as Christmas, New Year’s, and March/April, which is when you’ll run into college spring breaks. 2. Always Ask about Discounts

Lots of hotels and other places give discounts for membership in certain organizations, such as AAA or AARP. They many not always tell you that though, and so often you’ll need to inquire about it. This can sometimes be a significant discount, such as 15% off.

If you can plan out your vacation and know how many days you’ll want to spend doing each activity, you can save a lot of money by doing stuff in advance. Other theme parks often offer discounts if you buy tickets ahead of time online. For instance, Universal Studios offers cheaper prices online than at the gate, and Busch Gardens will also give you a certain percentage off of your ticket price when purchasing in advance.

4. Search in Advance for Deals

The sooner you know you’re going on vacation, the sooner you can jump on the internet and look for good deals. Places such as Disney World offer great package deals, such as a free dining plan or up to 40% off a room. However, these deals are often for limited dates, or else they are only available for a limited time. If you don’t do your research you’ll miss out on some of the best ways to save money.

5. Be Open to Hotel Options

Areas in Florida have all sorts of hotel options. You’ve got everything from your high class, fancy hotels, to condos and resorts, to the most basic of motels. If you’re not that picky about where you want to stay you can find all sorts of deals. There are many credit card rewards that offer great hotel deals. You don’t necessarily have to stay in a small, cheap motel room. There are plenty of nice places that are still reasonable. This is especially true if you are staying in the Orlando area. Although staying on property, such as at Disney or Universal, can be expensive, there are lots of really great places right outside of the parks which you can get for sometimes half the price. You should also be open to options within whatever hotel you choose. Remember that many times you pay more for a water view room, a room with one king size bed, or a suite, and they extra fee per day can really add up. Though the idea of a water view or luxury suite sounds really nice, consider how much time you’ll actually be spending in your hotel room. If you plan to spend most of the days out and exploring Florida, it’s probably better to save your money for something else.

6. Have a Budget

Once you get there, you may be tempted to spend your money on lots of things. Maybe it’s a special experience, such as seeing a show or getting a photograph taken, or perhaps it’s just a bunch of souvenirs that you want. Keep in mind what you actually have money for, and what you can afford. If you only allow yourself to spend a set amount per day, you won’t go over your limit and spend too much. This is especially true if you are traveling with kids, because they will always want to buy souvenirs – t-shirts, stuffed animals, games, toys, and whatever else they see. They also may start begging for snacks and ice cream as soon as they see those locations. Make sure that you tell your kids about the budget as well. It might be a good idea to tell each child they have a set amount they can spend for the day. That way if they want a souvenir they can buy that, but if they’d prefer to get an ice cream cone they can spend the money on whatever they want.

7. Look for Coupons Online

You don’t have to be on Extreme Couponing to save plenty of money this way. There are lots of websites where you can get great deals on everything from activities to food to spa treatments. Look for websites that might cater to Orlando locals. Websites such as Groupon, Living Social, and others provide what you might be looking for if you set your home city to wherever you are traveling to.

Halawa Valley: A Lost World

The lush, green valley on Molokai’s east end is strewn with waterfalls and panoramic vistas, and can be explored with a guided hike. The Kalaupapa Peninsula

Molokai is an island drenched in mystique. Kalaupapa is home to the famed leper colony; its residents were once believed to have been cursed.   The colony provided a sanctuary of self-defense from the outside world. The sufferers of what later was recognized as Hansen’s disease were exiled here from 1866 until the 1940s. Although medication has stopped the spread of the disease, a few patients still call Kalaupapa their home. Once the last patient leaves, the peninsula will become a national park.

If you are a bit of an athlete, you might hike from the breathtaking sea cliffs down to the colony for a tour. Those who wish to experience local folklore can visit KaUle o’Nanahoa; legend has it that women who visit this aptly shaped rock, near the Kalaupapa Lookout, will become fertile or conceive a child. At the Lookout, visitors can stand on the tallest sea cliffs in the world. Somewhere between the sky and the sea, you just may find the marriage utmost peace and tranquility.

Historic Hawaiian Agriculture

At the 600-acre Molokai Coffee Plantation, you can learn about the island’s farming history and visit the espresso bar.  If you’re still finding it difficult to completely let go, you can visit Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove on the south shore, where King Kamehameha V planted 1,000 coconut palms in the 1860s.  Although only a few hundred of the trees still survive, it is a stunning display that demonstrates how nature and humans can live in harmony. Swimming is pure delight at Kalihiwai Beach, where pools and streams cross the sand and are perfect for kids and families. The mountainous cliffs of Na Pali Coast can only be accessed via an 11-mile trail, by boat alongside friendly dolphins, or by air. Cars are not allowed, so you won’t be bombarded with tourists. For the more adventurous, a zip line tour at Princeville Ranch will give you an unexpected view of breathtaking scenery, with a pit stop at an idyllic swimming hole and waterfall for unexpected rejuvenation.

Paradise on Earth

For a lazy, idyllic adventure take a boat up the Wailua River to visit the Fern Grotto, a natural amphitheater formed from lava rock and draped by ferns. A true-life fern gully, with its red earth and velvety green blanket is a popular wedding location. In the interior of Kauai, Waimea Canyon–the Grand Canyon of the Pacific–is a treasure of waterfalls, wrinkled cliffs covered with rainforests, breathtaking chasms, and amazing colors. The Limahuli Garden on the North Shore is set next to dramatic Makana Mountain and embodies the lushness that made Kauai known as the Garden Island.

1.       Edwards Air Force Base – The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center is the home base for several NASA aircraft that are responsible for carrying out the agency’s missions of space exploration, space operations, scientific discovery, and aeronautical research and development. The Dryden Flight Research Center has been the testing grounds for the newest, fastest, and highest aircraft over the past 60 years. They are currently helping the testing process of the shuttles’ replacement, the Crew Exploration Vehicle. There are public tours twice monthly where you will get to tour NASA, the Air Force Base flight line, and the test center museum. The base is a great educational opportunity for organized field trips. Stay in a Lancaster CA motel to be close to all of the high-tech action going on at NASA.

2.       Palmdale Plant 42 – Joe Davies Heritage Airpark is the perfect destination for Aerospace fanatics and history buffs. The airpark museum is home to 17 retired military aircraft that were developed and tested at the United States Air Force Plant 42. A few of the items on display include a scaled version of the B-2 Spirit, A-4 Skyhawk, F-4 Phantom II, F-105 Thunderchief, F-101 Voodoo, and the popular F-14 Tomcat among others. Plant 42 is where Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman all have headquarters where they develop and test new aircraft designs. The airpark is open to the public on weekends and there are guided tours operated by volunteers on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7-11am.

3.       Devil’s Punchbowl – If you are up for a little closer connection with nature instead of technology, the Devil’s Punchbowl is Southern California’s mini Grand Canyon. The Punchbowl Canyon is 300 feet deep and the nature center with educational materials about the flora and fauna is 4,740 feet above sea level. There are several trails you can head out on to spend a day with nature. Designated trails are anywhere from one to seven miles round trip, so plan ahead and bring some sunscreen and water to fight off the high desert heat. Make your home base one of the popular Palmdale motels and get an early morning start on the trails to catch the most beautiful views of the landscape.

Museums

There are many museums in Chicago, but some big hitters include the Field Museum, filled with dinosaur bones and Shedd Aquarium where many varieties of aquatic species call home. Additionally, the Art Institute of Chicago is a popular place to visit. The variety of artists, from Monet to Van Gogh is astounding and worth the visit.

Another museum that everyone can enjoy is the Museum of Science and Industry. This museum contains exhibits which are designed to teach the viewer various science lessons. A favorite among many museum goers is the section focusing on the human body where you see a gigantic heart and see things like where all the valves are located. There is also a concentration test where you can challenge a friend to see whose mind can stay focused the longest. Another popular attraction is the weather center where a two story tornado is in motion and controlled by those below. And don’t forget to stop by during the Christmas season to see evergreen trees decorated with items from countries around the world.

Other Attractions

After checking out all the museums Chicago has to offer, some shopping and dining may be in store. Navy Pier is a popular destination for many. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, this top rated site includes a 150-foot Ferris wheel along with countless dining options and places to spend all that hard earned cash.

If you want to get a great view of the Windy City, make sure to take some time to head up to the John Hancock Observatory and SkyDeck Chicago located at the Willis Tower. Both of these attractions will give you an amazing view of the city and are a tourist favorite.

A location gaining attention in recent years is Millennium Park where you can see the iconic “Cloud Gate” sculpture. No list of things to do in Chicago would be complete without a nod to the excellent theaters the city has to offer. Chicago is filled with famous theaters including the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and the famous Chicago Theatre. The Roller Coaster at New York-New York

If your kids enjoy a good adrenaline rush, check out The Roller Coaster in New York-New York. Traveling at 67 mph, this heart-pounding ride has a 203-foot ascent and a 144-foot drop. Catch your breath by taking a leisurely stroll through the hotel’s NYCity-themed lobby, where you can visit “neighborhoods” and restaurants created to resemble Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn streetscapes. There is even a small version of Central Park.

CSI: The Experience at MGM Grand

“CSI: The Experience” is an attraction designed for families who enjoy a good mystery. Based on several popular television shows, this hands-on exhibit at the MGM Grand gives young super-sleuths and adults the chance to use their observational skills; you will gather clues and examine evidence as you set off to solve one of three mysteries. “CSI: The Experience” provides the perfect combination of family fun and real science for budding detectives.

Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay

Children who are fascinated by sea life will appreciate Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef. North America’s only predator-based aquarium is filled with sharks of all shapes and sizes, sawfish, rays, piranhas, turtles and moon jellies. The exhibit also offers daily educational programs that include both a one-hour aquarium tour and a one-hour classroom session on ocean life conservation conducted by Shark Reef’s Educational Team.

Hoover Dam

Looking for a quick family day trip? Travel just 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas where everyone can visit the Hoover Dam. Long considered an engineering marvel, this historic landmark is one of our nation’s largest hydroelectric power plants. There are a variety of tours available for every interest and timeframe. Travel to the dam’s observation deck for an awe-inspiring view, or descend 500 feet by elevator to view its immense power generators. Families can even take private tours through the Hoover Dam’s inspection tunnels.

Remember that preparation is the key to a perfect trip. Plan activities in advance since some attractions may have age, height or weight restrictions. Hours and prices are also subject to change. With a bit of planning your family is certain to have a fantastic time.

Volcanoes

Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano, has been erupting continuously for twenty-eight years (since 1983) and is responsible for a thin layer of “vog” (volcanic fog) hovering over the southwestern areas.  It boasts the most spectacular photographic vantage points, from hikes to helicopter rides.  Beware, do not walk on the black (seemingly solid) lava if it is still steaming; you just may find yourself standing directly over a flowing stream of red, molten hot lava.

Mauna Kea is the world’s tallest volcano, and also bigger than Mt. Everest when measured from base to summit (over 33,000 ft).  Take a 4-wheel drive or tour to the top for an amazing view (you can also see Maui) and prearrange a tour at some of the famous 13 international observatories; Mauna Kea provides the clearest skies in the world for viewing outer space (see http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/info/vis/).

Waterfalls

Akaka Falls, near Hilo, is one of the best family treks in the state.  Accessible by an easy ½ mile walking trail, this rainforest phenomenon is not to be missed.  At the NW point of the island, Waipio Valley offers a nice view from the lookout.  But if you want the adventure of your life, you can hike to any of its six waterfalls (all over 600 feet); you might want to stay overnight at one of my favorite bed and breakfasts in the world (the Hamakua Hideaway) and have a nearby retreat to relax in before and after the hikes.

Ocean Sports

Watch out for sea urchins (called vana in Hawaiian) or you’ll have a nasty pointed spine in your foot in short order.  They are black and tucked underwater near the rocks.  Eels are also prevalent along the rocky underwater shoreline though they won’t come out unless provoked (they are night creatures); just step onto the sand from the ledges and don’t poke anything into the rocky crevasses and you’re ok.

Snorkeling – Kahaluu Beach Park on the “Kona-side” is the best overall spot on the island; a nice-sized beach with shade trees, barbeques, a party pavilion, picnic tables and bathrooms.  There are over 100 species of fish, colorful coral and calm waters.  The north end is for surfing and body boarding so keep to the south of them.  Great for family fun and birthday parties (you need to reserve the pavilion)! Good parking and access.

Sunbathing & Swimming – Magic Sands Beach (the beach literally washes away if there are large winter waves) is a tiny Kailua-Kona city beach; off the Queen K between 88 and 89 mile markers, Kua Bay is a natural white-sand beach (a local favorite) with facilities, drinking fountains and turquoise waters, but take an umbrella as there are no shade trees. Hapuna Beach is a 200’ wide white-sand beach (man made) that includes picnic grounds, facilities and a small snack bar, and is also a favorite for body boarding and body surfing.  The luxurious Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea Beach hotels sit up on the hill above the beach, and there are state cabins available.

Surfing – most of the great locations are on the “Kona-side.” Along the shoreline of Alii Drive are three spots:  Banyans (popular with locals and a hot spot for the expert), Kahaluu (a fun fast-paced break, and the family can picnic or snorkel while you’re surfing), and Lymans (a long left-hand reef break, best in a SW swell). Pinetrees, at the north end of the “old airport beach park” is known as a swell magnet that breaks year round.  On the “Hilo-side,” winter swells can create an experienced surfer’s dream waves at Honolii Beach Park.

Boating - Be sure to bring along some motion sickness pills if you don’t already have your “sea legs!”  And slather on that sunscreen, the islands’ clear skies and clear blue waters are a lethal combination for fair skin.

• Atlantis Submarines (Kona) these miniature subs descend over 100 feet in safe comfort.  Don’t forget your camera, there will be a plethora of exotic creatures to photograph!
• Captain Zodiac (Kona) lots to do, dolphin and whale viewing to snorkeling and exploring sea caves; check out blowholes and listen to stories and history along the way.
• Fishing – (Kona) you can charter a boat at Honokohau Harbor just a few minutes north of Kailua-Kona (check w/hotel concierge or Google to help choose from a plethora of these).  You can catch a marlin and they’ll bring it back to the dock and take your photo with it!

The City of Refuge

One of the most sacred places in Hawaii, Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau, has been restored to its 1700’s appearance. Its Great Wall divides the Palace and the Place of Refuge (where those having been sentenced to death were granted sanctuary and absolution for a 2^nd chance to resume a normal life – if they could reach it before being slain).   There are authentic and traditional canoes, tools, games bowls, statues, heiaus (temples), carved images and petroglyphs.  If you happen to notice signs to Kealekekua Bay to the north of this landmark, beware that the beach there is rocky, the shore break can be dangerous and sting rays can be prevalent (if stung, rub coarse sand into the welts to remove the stingers).

Highways

Even for locals, driving the highways at night is considered risky.  The Beltway up mauka (hugging “the mountain”) is only a 2-lane road, and can be treacherous with blind curves, and no guard rails on much of it; especially watch out for passing cars and tour buses.  There are not any street lights between the sparse neighborhoods and if you break down you will be in the “pitch dark,” trying to flag down a ride.  The shortcut from Kailua-Kona to Waimea (#190) is a great time saver but is also up mauka (same cautions apply).  The shoreline “Queen K” (Kaahumanu) highway, running alongside Keahole airport up to Kohala, is flat and wider but beware the roaming donkeys (hitting one will total your car and you’ll be lucky to survive at high speeds), and watch for cars coming to a sudden halt to veer off to their favorite surf spot.
