No place does the holidays like New York City. The creativity that defines the Big Apple year-round kicks into high gear come December.
Whether it’s taking in a seasonal show, listening to holiday music or simply kicking down the glowing city streets, New York has something for everyone.
And for every holiday sensation you’ve experienced or heard about, there are dozens of lesser known but equally exciting choices, often with smaller crowds and lower prices. We’ve run down the “classic” options, along with some fun alternatives. If you’ve “done” NYC at the holidays before, here’s your chance to see something new.
THE CLASSIC: Rockefeller Center Christmas tree
Dec. 2 through Jan. 7
600 Fifth Ave., 212-632-3975, rockefellercenter.com
Kick off the season right with celebrities, tourists and holiday lovers galore at the annual tree lighting at Rockefeller Center on Wednesday. Draped in 30,000 lights, the 10-ton tree, a 76-foot Norway spruce, is sure to dazzle even the biggest Scrooge in your party.
THE ALTERNATIVE: Angel Tree at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Now through Jan. 6
1000 Fifth Ave. (at 82nd Street), 212-535-7710, metropolitanmuseum.org
Delicately decorated with 18th century Neapolitan angels and other ornate works of art, the Angel Tree in the Met lends a sense of serenity to the season – even with all the tourists who flock to see it. The 20-foot blue spruce can be found in the Medieval Sculpture Hall.
