Croatia, Estonia; Bulgaria: I’ve visited and loved every one of them. Even if I did completely embarrass myself in Bulgaria by complaining that a bottle of wine was priced at 10 Lev in one restaurant when I’d had the same wine in another for 8 Lev. I’d gotten quite angry about this before realising that 1 Lev is around 30p and I was getting annoyed over a 60 pence price difference!

However, the strangest of my Eastern European excursions came when my family decided to treat me to a 40th birthday gift which turned out to be a few days in Ukraine.

Ukraine is, in itself, an unusual place for a vacation. They’re not really a tourist sort of destination, 95% of the people speak no English and the standard of hotels was, well, not the greatest. However, Kiev – where we stayed – was yet another beautiful city. If you ever get a chance to go, be sure to check out the Motherland Monument. In fact, you can’t miss it. Imagine the Statue of Liberty transplanted to a Soviet city and you’ll have some idea of what this looks like.

Day two of our stay and the wife was giggling away to herself over breakfast. ‘We’re going on a day trip’, she said and giggled some more.

‘OK, I’ll bite’, I replied, ‘where are we going?’

‘Chernobyl’, she said through fits of laughter.

‘Yeah, very funny. Like they run day trips to Chernobyl. Where are we really going?’

‘Chernobyl. Really. We’re going to Chernobyl. It’s all booked. We’ve got security clearance to the exclusion zone and we’re going today’.

And so it came to pass. Off to Chernobyl we went. For those of you who may not know, Chernobyl was the scene of the biggest nuclear disaster in history. A city of 45,000 people had to be evacuated and tens of thousands of people were affected by the radiation poisoning.

This was possibly the most unnerving and creepiest tourist trip I have ever been on. I’m all for experiencing new things, but exposure to high level radiation has never been high on the list.

However, it was both strange and strangely moving. On the bus ride out there, there was a video explaining the background to the disaster and its aftermath which left pretty much all of the tour group lost for words.

The visits to the nuclear reactor and to the now abandoned city of Pripyat were similarly sobering. Pripyat was, literally, a ghost town: a feeling reinforced by being shown around a deserted school and an empty hotel. I wish I could describe how I felt a little better but all I can do is say that it was moving and eerie at the same time.

Many of the other people in the group were taking photos but somehow I felt this was disrespectful. I can’t put my finger on why. I guess it’s because this was a major disaster area, not a theme park.

Possibly the oddest part of the whole day was meeting the people in Opachychi village. These were resettlers: people who had voluntarily decided to move back into the exclusion zone. There were probably no more than a couple of dozen people, mostly very elderly, who had all been born in the village and had chosen to come back, regardless of the risks.

Arriving back in Kiev that evening, both my wife and I were pleased that we had made a trip not many other people would consider but we were left emotionally drained by the experience. It’s something I would recommend you do, but don’t be surprised if you feel very differently at the end of the day from how you did at the beginning.
