The exhibition addresses the stereotypes that have shaped the bad reputation of the spider and assumes the characteristics of this efficient predator is an important link in the food chain.

Fighting stereotypes

Spiders are not monsters but hairy animals very surprising. Hated and feared, they are among the most misunderstood animals. The course of the exhibition is designed as a progressive discovery to get to know, without omitting the imaginary part of the reason, real or mythical, of the fear they inspire. Areas, defined by the set design, deal with arachnophobia, taking care to warn the visitor.

What is a spider? An animal with eight legs (insects …), unlike a body divided into two parts: the cephalothorax and abdomen (unlike mites …), eye (0 to 8), chelicerae (appendices inject venom), dies (forthe son of silk). In order to clarify the family of spiders (the Spiders), the exhibition presents the animals ‘parents’, what they have in common and their differences – spider, mites, scorpions – and false friends who have to spider’s name as the water spider (it’s a bug), spider crab (crustacean) and the spider at the butcher is a choice cut of beef.

Discover a large family

Become familiar with the spider, is also to discover the infinite variety of species: 1600 in France, between 35 000 and 40 000 in the world, not to mention all those we know, especially in equatorial and tropical , which concentrate the highest number of species. The spiders were indeed colonized all walks of life, even if they are less common in extreme environments and probably absent from the polar caps. Visitors can see the spiders of all sizes, colorful and multifaceted, many of which are not as ugly one wants to admit. Some of them, the most striking, are reproduced in large models.

The festival takes place in February and this year runs from February 16th to 26th. However, it is preceded by other associated festivals, meaning that the month of February is full of events. There is something for everyone and organisers are hoping to garner even more attendees than last year. Throughout the festival, films are shown in a variety of venues, not just cinemas. Last year, for example, a swimming pool was the venue for one showing.

Glasgow is an easy city to get around thanks to its comprehensive public transport, which means finding somewhere to stay won’t be a problem during the festival. Prior to the main festival, the Glasgow Youth Film Festival runs from the 5th to the 15th, with the Glasgow Short Film Festival running from the 9th to the 12th. The Short Film Festival is showcasing work from Iceland but features over 70 films competing for four awards. The Glasgow Film Festival includes films chosen for young audiences. The event also includes hands-on workshops. This is one element of the festival that makes it unique.

The main festival includes exclusive UK premieres. ‘Your Sister’s Sister’ by Lynn Shelton, an up and coming director and Irvine Welsh’s ‘Ecstasy’ are among the 293 films on show. The films are truly international, though with a fair amount of work by Scottish filmmakers. There will be new feature films from all over the globe, documentaries and a feature called ‘Out of the Past’, which includes some classic old films. In addition, there will be a celebration of the life and work of Gene Kelly. There will also be the ‘FrightFest’, featuring horror films from Australia.

Finally, as in previous years, the festival will focus on one particular country. This year it is the turn of German filmmakers to be highlighted in the ‘Welcome to Germany’ feature. And to round everything off, there is the Glasgow Music and Film Festival, which includes documentaries and live performances.

2012 is the Year of Creative Scotland and the film festival is the first major event of this important year and will kick off this cultural year in style.
