Visitors who hope to find a European getaway steeped in history and a unique culture need look no further than Hungary, a country situated in the heart of Europe. It is the gateway for both Central and Eastern Europe, and though its neighbors (Serbia, Slovakia and Romania, among others) generally boast more historic sites, Hungary is packed with everything the wandering tourist might be interested in. As a matter of fact, due to its generally underrated nature, many people travel elsewhere, making Hungary the ideal destination to get away for an extended self-catering, relaxing holiday.
Regardless of whether you want to spend your time in bustling Budapest, prefer to escape to the Danube Bend or to Lake Balaton, or yearn for a holiday in quaint Zalakaros or Tata, there are a variety of self-catering cottages and private rooms available for rent. Throughout the planning process for a Hungary holiday, special deals are likely to surface.
Central Danube has the most holiday apartments available for rent, which makes sense considering Budapest’s location in the region. It is also the most popular destination for self-catering holidaymakers to visit. The city’s skyline is so spectacular it has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. With its abundance of ancient monuments, stunning architecture, famous thermal baths, hot nightlife and excellent cuisine, visitors to Budapest will find plenty to keep them busy. Among the highlights are the Castle District, which is home to many mansions and a large palace, as well as the statue park, which is a sarcastic nod toward the old Communist regime.
Lake Balaton is also an immensely popular destination for self-catering holidays. The lake is Europe’s largest and stretches for 50 miles. Lake Balaton is much more relaxed than Budapest, and visitors enjoy the laid-back ambience of the beaches, where the water is frequently warmer than the air during the summer. Local vineyards provide rich wine, which pairs perfectly with the setting sun over the lake. An abundance of water activities (including waterskiing and windsurfing) as well as horseback riding and golf round out the perfect self-catering holiday experience.
Though not nearly as popular, the Northern Great Plain and Southern Great Plain should not be overlooked for a potential holiday getaway. Located in the Southern Great Plain, Szeged is an important but severely underrated destination. It is rich in culture, and visitors are sure to find theatre, opera and music performances regardless of the time of year they visit. The local cuisine is known throughout the country, and travelers should take the time to savor the flavor.
Those who visit the Northern Great Plain will be rewarded with rich tradition, thermal baths and village life. Horseback riding is a popular pastime here, and there are numerous horse riding shows throughout the area, which provide visitors with the opportunity to admire the talents of local equestrians. The area’s largest city is Debrecen, which is home to the largest Calvinist church in Hungary. To understand more about the way of life in this isolated area of Hungary, visit the Hortobágy National Park, which preserves the national treasures found in the Northern Great Plain.
